Guest crafty Posted May 1, 2004 Report Posted May 1, 2004 A new beta of the excellent Smart Explorer is now available. This new version doesn't come with a lot of new features. Some bugs have been fixed and several functions optimized. The beta expiration date has been postponed to may 31st, 2004. It will probably be the last beta before final release. Available here
Guest Disco Stu Posted May 1, 2004 Report Posted May 1, 2004 First impressions are that is the finished article, as implied in the description above. Well done Binarys :D Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest nato Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 Can someone tell me. . . i have had previous versions installed on my phone which give an informational message that it is a beta version. normally you press later or something similar and it continues. Ever since i updated it not long ago, it on longer continues to run and the software actually expires. This didnt used to happen. Is this right? do we now have to reinstall it every time now? Posted from my SmartPhone! Each of the beta versions has an expiry date, with the latest 2.06b due to expire at the end of May 2004. I found out last week when I went to install 2.05b, that it had expired - a date set by the developers, rather than a time limit set when you install it onto your phone. To find out which version of Smart Explorer you have installed, click Edit and then About SmartExplorer... A screen will appear telling you which version of the application you have. I hope that helps.
Guest Disco Stu Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 Its also worth pointing out that you are NOT expected to cough up for each version. Your registration code works with each release. Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 This seems to be the most popular Explorer program for the SmartPhone. How does it compare to ALL-Explorer?
Guest Vector Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 I personally think this is better...plus you HAVE to pay for All-Explorer i think? :D
Guest comebackdx Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 I thought All-Explorer was good, but then a friend showed me the Smart Explorer, and when I tried it out, I was converted. The difference between Smart Explorer & All-Explorer is that, the former gives you all the functionality with a reminder to register, whilst the unregisterd All-Explorer is free for 30 days. I prefer Smart Explorer because it makes better use of the screen real estate. Best thing to do it download both, and see which one you prefer. That's what I did.
Guest Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 Thanks guys Does ALL-Explorer offer any more functions? My brother has it on his SPV (the trial version, I doubt it works anymore) and I don't remember any difference between it and Smart Explorer. I'm considering registering, it's very useful and unlike most PC software it's very fairly priced.
Guest yoos Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 This is a GREAT program and I'll definitely be registering once the final version is released...
Guest Disco Stu Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 End of this month I would assume mate ; as that is when the current beta expires. Why not try it now ? Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest crafty Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 @bradavon, by the sounds of it (see the first post) the end of May. Smart Explorer is probably THE most essential app for the Smartphone. It is made all the more useful on the E200 as it adds the ability to send files via Bluetooth. AFAIK ALL-Explorer doesn't do this.
Guest ajb3000 Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 yoos, when you register it you get free updates, so you can register it now, then when the final version comes out just install that with the same code and voila.
Guest Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 End of this month I would assume mate ; as that is when the current beta expires. Why not try it now ? Posted from my SmartPhone! I already am thanks. I used ALL-Explorer last night and I didn't like the interface, the split screen idea is rubbish. I see that there is quite a few different Explorers though some even have FTP clients (I can't think why you'd need one on a SmartPhone though?) and Text Editors. See: http://www.handango.com/PlatformSearch.jsp...optionId=1_11_2 I don't think Smart Explorer has an FTP client. Looking into it Resco makes some decent software including a better Explorer than 'Smart Explorer' (60 day trial), it's a bit more expensive though at $14.95: http://www.resco-net.com/smartphone/smartphone.asp It includes password protection for ZIP files and Encryption, neither can be done in Smart Explorer. I don't think it supports BlueTooth though. They also make a decent Photo Viewer (also 60 days), which comes with a Wizard for your PC to resize images to the SPV's screen size. It's pretty neat and unlike the main software it doesn't seem to expire, you can also install the full package but then uninstall the SmartPhone Photo Viewer.
Guest crafty Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 That Sympasoft Phone Explorer is quite impressive (file management, FTP Client, Text Editor, Task Manager and Battery Status) but then again it wants to be for $20! The only thing that it can do over free/banner-ware apps is the FTP Client and i'm not sure if i would ever use that. I think i'd rather stick with Binary's Smart Explorer and Task Manager, Orneta Notepad and Beersoft's Battery monitor for now!
Guest Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 The Task Manager is rubbish, very basic. It only lets you delete on process/application at a time and just gives you a basic list of everything running on the phone (including system processes that you can't close anyway). The Battery Monitor doesn't show you anymore than you can see free with the phone anyway and as you say the FTP client while a nice idea I can't really think of a good use for one on a SmartPhone. Resco's Explorer is nice though, it looks more like Windows Explorer than Smart Explorer but then again I'm not sure I'll actually ever need to password protect zip files or use their encryption feature. The Task Manager from Binary is very powerful I really like it. Especially the one button press to close all open applications. * What does 'Beersoft's Battery monitor' show you over what you can see for free with the phone anyway? * Orneta Notepad, is just a plain text editor right?
Guest Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 Not wanting to go to far off topic but Orneta also make a FTP program that's only five bucks: http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDet...productId=99042 The trial version doens't seem to expire but it only lets you upload 1 file per session.
Guest crafty Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 Beersofts battery monitor (here) tells you how how long your battery is gonna last etc and Orneta Notepad is a pretty handy text editor (search functions, send text via sms or email including address book lookup).
Guest Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 Thanks Crafty I've since installed those two, nice programs. I'm using an older version of the battery tester so thanks for the heads up on the latest version.
