Microsoft Reorganizes Mobile Devices Division

Midnight came across this intersting story

Microsoft has combined its division that creates Windows Mobile with the one that creates Windows CE.

Most handheld users should be aware that Windows Mobile is based on Windows CE, Microsoft's operating system for all types of embedded devices, from routers to sewing machines.

In the past, after Microsoft's embedded devices division had finished work on a new version of Windows CE, it would be given to the mobile devices division, which would modify it for Pocket PCs and Smartphones. This arrangement led to long delays between completion of a new Windows CE version and the release of a corresponding version for mobile devices.

Mark Spain, director of Microsoft's mobile devices division, recently told The Star Online that, in order to reduce this lag time, what were previously two divisions have been combined into one: the Mobile and Embedded Devices division. This will be responsible for developing new versions of Windows CE and Windows Mobile.

Microsoft has been working for some time to reduce the time between releases of Windows CE and Windows Mobile. At its core, Windows Mobile 2003 is much closer to Windows CE than Pocket PC 2002 and Smartphone 2002 were. This means improvements made to Windows CE can be much more easily included in future versions of Windows Mobile than had been possible before.

Last month, Microsoft released a beta of Windows CE 5.0. The final version is scheduled to be available during summer 2004. This is expected to be the basis for the next major version of Windows Mobile.

Got to be a good thing. Quicker updates and more consideration of what changes will mean to Mobile implementation.
