trying a homescreen for the first time

I am thinking of trying a homescreen for the first time, it all seems pretty scary to me, haven't seen any that don't have one problem reported by someone or other, im looking for something simple with no need for any extra apps as my phone is still as it came apart from some ringtones and it is unlocked, please help!
