Guest bigal Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Hello all, posted this on te Microsoft NG but no response, any help would be much appreciated... even if it's "It can't be done". Thanks Alun If I am somewhere that has no GPRS signal is it possible to configure the smartphone (E200) to send and receive emails using it's inbox without connecting to GPRS? i.e. can you use a WAP dialup number or something as opposed to the GPRS connection. Will I be able to configure this for overseas use ie prefixing the dialup number with +44 from outside of the UK. Any help and or instructions on how to do this would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Alun
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Martin is the resident expert but have a look at this post, it may help. http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=1078...light=wap+email
Guest bigal Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Thanks for the reply. I have all my connections set up. I change the connection details for internet and wap to Orange CSD WAP. When I try to send and receive email I get an icon --> <-- above the signal strength bar where the G icon would normally appear. But then I get the following message. "Unable to connect to the incomming mail server. Verify the server is correct & then try again". The email account settings work fine over GPRS. Any further help would be welcome. Thanks Alun
Guest martin Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 If I am somewhere that has no GPRS signal is it possible to configure the smartphone (E200) to send and receive emails using it's inbox without connecting to GPRS? i.e. can you use a WAP dialup number or something as opposed to the GPRS connectionYes you can but you will need to use a dialup to an ISP and this will be charged as a GSM data call. You can't use the WAP dialup I'm afraid (or at least not for the full E-mail Internet service). Also GSM data calls are only possible on contract accounts with Orange. You just need to get the dialup number for the ISP which you should get off their website. Check their help section i.e The dialup settings for www.freeuk.com (0845 0790007) would be Create dialup connection Description: Free UK Contry code: 44 Dialing code: 845 Phone number: 0790007 Username: (login username) Password: (login password) Domain: (leave blank) Then in data connections set 'Internet Connection: Free UK'. Now it should allow internet and E-mail connectivity. GPRS still has the advantage of being faster but it's good to have a backup  Just remember you are charged by connection time and the costs of GSM data calls may vary between service plans. Will I be able to configure this for overseas use ie prefixing the dialup number with +44 from outside of the UK. I imagine that you should able to if you have international calling setup on your account although as it's a data call rather than voice call it may depend on the roaming network :? You can only try it I suppose :)
Guest bigal Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 Thanks Martin, I'll be sure to give it a try that way. I would have thought I'd be able to use the Orange Wap dialup as I'm trying to access my Orange email pop3 account but then again I guess that would have been too simple  Alun
Guest martin Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 I've just gone back and had a look at the WAP Email options  It seems that you can access Email accounts using the Orange WAP dialup (kind of :) ) You can't access them directly but you can access them via the Orange Portal. You need to set the WAP connection as Orange CSD WAP and proxy as 192.168.71.35:8080. In IE untick 'Auto detect settings' and make 'Select Network : WAP network'. Access wap.orange.co.uk and go to Email in the main menu which will give you a list of Email providers. I've only tried hotmail (which works great) so I don't know what the others are like. Note that the FULL internet Email service using the Smartphone inbox will still require an ISP dialup connected the Internet connection. Posted from my SmartPhone!
