Guest kvl Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Hey guys, not sure if this is the correct area to post but... I'm torn between getting a MPX or MPX 100, a deal breaker is the MPX. I know that you will be able to get a sd wifi card for the MPX100, but my question is that is it a better bet to get the MPX 100 and the sd wifi 802.11b card. And then get a sd wifi 802.11g card when it comes out. So in some way future proofing the MPX100, coz with the MPX you are stuck with wifi 802.11b
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 To be honest you would not notice that much differance in speed etc so it's best to decide do you want a ppc or smartphone?
Guest beersoft Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 awarner is right wouldn't want g is it would kill the battery life, and i can't think of a need for 54mbps on a handheld device later Owen
Guest kvl Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Ah, Points I hadn't thought about and good points at that. I must admit I wanna be lazy and walk into my house and get it to snyc my emails without haven't to walk up the stairs to put it in the cradle. Awarner - I'm appreciate your thoughts - which do you have our eye on MPX or MPX100? Or...?
Guest McHale Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 I was torn between the MPx and the MPx220... until I saw how frigging huge the MPX actually was. I love the idea of having a PPC as my phone and have it with me at all times. But that thing is pretty big to have as a main phone. I'm going to wait until I get one in my grubby hands before I make the decision. I really want the PPC phone but the MPx200 (and MPx220) is pretty feature packed, much smaller, and WiFi capable. When I get a chance to actually use it as a phone and see how large it actually is, I'll know. -Mc
Guest kvl Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 McHale, I didn't know that the mpx220 would be wifi capable, but I guess if the sd (mini?) slot is sido compatable then why shouldn't it be?!? Are there any specs for the mpx220 flying about, can find specs for mpx and mpx100 but no mpx220-suggestions?
Guest zeta101 Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 i dont think you will be seeing miniSD wifi cards anytime soonish, i mean they are still working on getting more memory into the things. If you look at a normal SD wifi card it sticks out quite a bit...if the sd mini is smaller in width the the bit that sticks out will be smaller too, which means they have to work out how to make the wifi modual smaller, which takes time. Also look how long its taken for the normal SD wifi cards to come out...you wont get someone like sandisk making sd mini wifi cards just for the couple of devices that support it right away.
Guest McHale Posted May 10, 2004 Report Posted May 10, 2004 the specs on the MPx100 list it as WiFi capable with WiFi as an option. That's good enough for me. The MPx220 is a little bit upgraded from the MPx100 so it's a safe assumption WiFi will also be an option, if not actually part of the phone. Like I said, wait until a little bit and all your questions will be answered. -Mc

I've actually used an MPX and they aint that big...about the size of packet of cigs. @kvl - got for the mpx :)
Guest McHale Posted May 10, 2004 Report Posted May 10, 2004 when you hold the MPx to your head when your talking on the phone, the specs would say it's quite huge. I hope I'm wrong. I REALLY hope I'm wrong. thanks for the info (and bit of encouragement) -Mc
Guest Mannfeld Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Where are you finding a MPx or a MPx220 for sale? TIA Michael
Guest Vector Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Mannfield, they aren't out yet  The MPx100 is expected sometime second half of this year but not sure about the MPx or MPx220...i'm guessing sometime this year tho :)

I REALLY hope I'm wrong. thanks for the info (and bit of encouragement) -Mc You're not wrong, we held one at the MoDaCo meet, its the same with all Pocket PC Phone Editions, a Bluetooth headset is the only "respectable" way to go and then you look like a poser :) (And yes i own a Bluetooth headset! lol)
Guest McHale Posted May 17, 2004 Report Posted May 17, 2004 yah, I held several PPC phones to my head and just didn't feel comfortable. :) I will still wait for the MPx220 to be released before I buy anything because I *WANT* to like the MPx (but am afraid of it's size). I noticed the one common thing in all the videos I've seen of the MPx is that NONE would show it being used as a phone. How odd of a phone demo! Let's be honest. A PPC just rules as a phone and a Smartphone is like a "lite" version of it (except the SW isn't interchangable). I use my PPC with internal WiFi a lot. I can get used to that on a smartphone but would miss a lot of stuff. I'm in a "wait and see" mode now. I have too many phones now anyway and just bought another PPC so a long wait will not only not bother me, but is better on my credit card statement! thanks for the info Brody... -Mc
