The future for smartphones? gaming?

Now that we have many emulators released and great games coming from Midnite it seems the market for gaming has really taken off.

games that ripped of such things as tetris and asteroids etc.. were getting a little boring. the emulation potential on these handsets is massive. hopefully with faster processors due soon we will see a large amount of portals emulated. keeping us happy til the new games are developed.

i would say that most game developers should be looking into the potential of these handsets as the future for mobile gaming. they are cable of doing so much and could easily compete with the new n gage and upcoming psp - bar some features- although the psp will have a phone option.

kumite looks like an amazing game as does another game i've been lucky to see. it would be nice to see some 3d action games like splinter cell or some in depth racing games like new york taxi or destruction derby.

as for the emulation side we have megadrive which i always said was more than able to run on the spv e200. we could invariably look to having mastersystem, snes running faster wen its cleaned up. and amstrad and commodore remember shinobi people? cant wait for that one.

The big port will be mame, with such games as simpsons arcade, golden axe and street fighter 2 arcade we would really see gaming on the spv take off. how far away is it? i don't know if anyone has further details on this or thoughts please post. on the megadrive im sure after more work other games will start to work my fav would be pga tour golf. many hours of play there.

with kumite it seems the level of quality coming will set a standard for new games in the future, imagine what we could get from new racing games, and gta style games. so here's to the future of mobile gaming and three cheers for the developers of spv and the new games coming soon.

Games are great, but wasn't the SPV touted as a business phone?

Where are the business applications, like Word and Excel editors?

Where are the database apps?

Very true, i was thinking of writing this on the subject of apps but i do believe that the phone has developed more into a gaming unit/phone rather than strictly for business users. but your rite a office application from microsoft would be the start of some thing great for the phone. and i would say with the on set of faster processors in smartphones- the end of handheld pcs.

the future of gaming on these phones does seem very bright indeed, and even MS themselves may have to rethink their strategy slightly, simply because it hasnt taken off as a business phone as much as they'd like...... or hasnt it..... I think the main problem is they underestimated the power of games to mobile users. I'd say the biggest users of mobile phones these days are 12 - 20 year olds, now, i would hardly call these business users, and they want games, ringtones, themes, phone covers, anything to show off to their freinds and make their phones individual, trhis is the market that MS needs to hit, and they are doing, already announced are new processors practically designed for the MS OS, and MS themselves have developed Mobile Direct X (to be made available in WM2K5 i beleive). I still think the mobile phone will struggle against a dedicated device like the PSP (hell, its a ps2 in mobile form, impressive stuff), and Nokia will get a rather large shock when thats released, they have to tread very carefully indeed with the NGage 2. Nintendo are going to struggle, the DS is underpowered and they are hoping their loyal fanbase will be happy with just a couple of gimmicks, Sega know all too well the might of Sony. But, the PSP isnt a mobile phone, so we dont need to worry there.

But, regarding applications, I cant agree more, but i think the problem is getting Windows developers to develop for the MS Smartphone, games is easy, lots are ports from other platforms, plenty of mobile game developers, but very few mobile app developers and thats why MS made .NET available in mobiles, at least make it as easy as possible for people to develop for the Smartphone.

My next wish.... someone develop a dedicated Windows Mobile gaming device, 320 x 240 widescreen display, proper rumble (not the spinning weight), 8 way 'analog' joystick (forget the press in action button, have it seperate...please), and a 300mhz OMAP 2 (mmmm, powervr) in it :)

agreed, however at the recent viewing of the psp they did mention possible mobile phone function to be included with certain psp models. so could get even stickier for n gage. the rehash of the n gage due out shortly is better but in no way can it compete with psp.

im looking forward to the point when the next generation smartphones reach 400 mhz processors with in built, purpose built graphics chips. will be great!! roll on the future...

makes me wonder what the next spv model is to be released, i think at the moment im going for mpx220.

I simply disagree.

MS SMARTPHONE is capable of so much more in terms of gaming and programming and yet we're bombarded with lets just say below par titles.

Like in any industry everyone just wants to make money I feel this is bad.

I think if someone was to make a game from passion and devotion it could be better than any £££ game.

There should be more free games.

There should be more originality and creativity.

Does this include the industry where you work for your boss ? Do YOU offer your services for free

You can't to say to software developers "Hey come and make some great games for the MS Smartphone instead and by the way they have to be free" :?

There are always free games being made available (and for that we are very grateful [-o:lol: After all many of these games have been sold for around $10 which I believe is more than fair.

Dude... You're 15. You have lots of free time.

Most developers do not have this luxury and time, I'm afraid to say, is money.

Wait 10 years and see if you still want to spend months developing something that you're not going to see financial rewards on when you have bills to pay.

cannot agree more, i personally would rather pay to play a real high quality game than get loads of free, but very low quality games. Of course, free doesnt necessarily mean low quality, and of course there are plenty of low quality commercial games, but, the very highest quality games are unlikely to be free simply due to the time taken to make them. btw, Eclipse took 5 months, the amount of code, gfx, sound in this game is scary (my gfx folder for eclipse is over 100mb uncompressed)

let me clarify i don't have alot of free time i want to complete my education fully im just talkin about making games as an extra hobby.

And i don't mean there should be more free games within which quality does not matter i mean more high class free games.

I think that if people knew that these high quality games were free they wouldn't mind waiting longer.
