I have never been able to sync my phone to outlook as yet, and since discovering this site , i thought id maybe ask here. Ive never used outlook before and this probably makes me look really thick  but when i plug my phone to the usb and active sync starts, i get a message from outlook saying "The server containg the global address list is no longer available." :?:

When i click ok it says "the action could not be completed", I the ok that and i get this box asking for the microsoft exchange server [whatever that is] and mailbox.

I havnt been able to understand what im doing.

Can someone guide me thriugh the setup please!!

I know, I look like an idiot, but hey!

Firstly, you're using Active sync 3.7?

What are you trying to sync against? The error suggests you're trying to connect to an exchange 2003 server as well as the PC. Obviously if your not running an exchange server, you should just sync with the PC.

Did you plug the phone in to the pc before installing activsync?

ok heres what i did...

- I re-installed outlook 2000 and activesync 3.6

- i plugged in the phone and set up a new standard partnership to sync with the only my desktop computer.

- next screen was the sync settings...i checked calandar and contacts only.

- active sync then started 'looking for changes'

- when the blue bar reached 1/3 of the way up the process, i got a message from outlook saying...

"The server containing the Global Address List is no longer available. You can reconnect to a different server by restarting Outlook or retry the operation when the server is reachable."

- I then click on ok and it says the action could not be completed.

- When i ok that, i get a screen asking me to provide the name of my exchange server and mail box.

- since i dont know what this info is, i click cancel.

- message saying "Sync cannot be completed because your Personal Information Manager (PIM) program cant be accessed. Ensure your PIM program is running and try to sync again. If your PIM is running, restart your computer."

- I then get 'attention required' beside my calendar and contacts link and asking to resolve items.

what am i doing wrong, from this description?

On the Active Sync window do you see the Options button on the top row? Click it, and under it at the very bottom of the screen a check box that says 'Server'? Is the box checked? Un select it if it is. Under the Rules Tab, look at the Pass Through and make sure the Connection box has ' The Iternet' selected. Let us know if that helps

Now this establishes a realtion between you PC only. If your e-mail server is an Exchange server, then ignore this and make sure you have supplied the correct details for your exchange connection.

Im using win 98se.

ok i changed the pass through box to "the internet", but still getting the same messages :)

As for the exchange server thing.. i actually have no idea what an exchange server means.

I dont usually recieve email through my phone, and on the rare occasions i do its just to check new mail in my yahoo account when im going to be away from a pc.

Im guessing now that its something to do with the exchange server thing, where do i find the info i need for that??

I thought I could back up all my stuff without having to access the internet.
