Guest nickcornaglia Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 I now have two xbox's. One was on the fritz. It was cheaper to get a new one than have it fixed. I was thinking about opening this up and adding the mod chip I've been reading about and a bigger harddrive...maybe making it into a media center. Anyone have any experience with this?
Guest Taoski Posted May 25, 2004 Report Posted May 25, 2004 Way too scary for my liking. Too risky! I sold my chipped PS2 bought an xbox premodded with the chip and hard drive... well worth every penny. Its brilliant! Does everything my PS2 used to... and 900% more!
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 I've got a modded xbox (and 20Gb HDD) and it's fantastic! Opens up the machine to it's full abilities, have a look at "Xbox Media Centre" it's pretty damn cool. Playing import/backup games is always usefull too.
Guest smokedog Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 I bought my pre-modded, not too good at soldering. I now have a 120Gb HD, but only 3Gb left on it. I suggest if your going to upgrade the HD buy the biggest one you can afford. I have about 40 games, 200+ Roms, 30+ Divx movies, final series of Friends and the 3th series of 24 on my HD :) Posted from my P900!
Guest Taoski Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 I got the 120gb drive too. Got 50gb free at the moment. XBOX Media Center is excellent! My hard disk is full of episodes of "Power Rangers Dino Thunder" - for the kids ..... of course.
Guest Ras Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 not done it myself, but you can mod an xbox without solder... my mate has a clip on chip, but it can't be flashed! This chip only supports an 80GB HDD, where as later roms take 120GB... HTH P
Guest nickcornaglia Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 I just tried the PC Version of XBOXMediaCenter and it's pretty cool. I also found this link where you can buy a modded xbox or trade in your current xbox. Kindof pricey though. http://www.friendtech.com/
Guest Taoski Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 I got mine from http://www.premodded.co.uk - cost me about £300 - but it was well worth it. I don't regret it at all!
Guest nickcornaglia Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 Can the data (pics, vids, music, games) be pulled right from the pc via a wireless network or does it need to actually reside on the xbox?
Guest Brody Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 The non-solder option is only available to certain types of XBox, i believe there were three last time i checked, versions 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 so be careful before you take the plunge! As for encece's question, it seems you can play video files from the HDD, DVD ROM or Network so i'm guessing you can stream.
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 yes - XBMC can stream data over a network, via SMB shares (windows file sharing). works very well. alas - i've not managed to get games to stream over a network yet, but audo/videos are great.
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 oh - and the solderless chips tend to be less reliable too! check out... http://www.xbox-scene.com/ for all your xbox needs.
Guest Colonel Trouble Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 www.xbox-scene.com  That should have all you need to know ... For other xbox users , may I recommend a fantastic Britsh xbox forum and website .. www.britxbox.co.uk Very friendly community almost on par with this one ! Fantastic site layout etc and great writing ...... A fantastic site for any and all xbox users ...
Guest phonesmarts Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 Yup best modding site ever. I'm glad i chose an XBOX over a GC. i have a 200GB HDD and its filled with games, and runs Linux (for some emus). it does everything that a PC does (except work) and more. BTW, did anyone get the XBOX Controller port > USB hub converter that was free from M$?Yup best modding site ever. Guest siu99spj Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 Or you could try here: http://www.tomshardware.com/consumer/20040...0511/index.html Lots of esy to read info and some decent links. Made me almost go out and buy one instantly. I've been thinking about making a HTPC for ages, and this might just be the cheapest method. Just need to know how noisy an XBox is (Like, are they as noisy as a PS2??)
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 i'd say my ps2's fan is far louder than the one on my xbox. You could always fit silent fans if you still find it too loud though.
Guest Taoski Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 I use XBMC to playback all my "goodies" and the fan does appear noisy to begin with - but you soon get used to it. A totally excellent program and certainly not one you could do without. I use my XBOX more as a media center these days! Just a shame the remote control is so.... "tomy" .....and that you can't record TV to the hard disk...... yet.....
Guest PritenC Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 For those of you who have modded an XBOX, A couple of questions: 1) what mod chip did you use? 2) Have you needed to change the DVD-Drive in the XBOX? - I've got one of the earliest there are and i've heard that some of them don't read CD-Rs 3) Do you need a DVD rewriter for your PC to use the new dashboards and such? Any help would be appreciated. []D
Guest Mr_Protozoa Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 1) I'm running the xecuter2 modchip 2) I've still got my original xbox dvd drive, have a look here... http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=17216 to see what drive you have. 3) To install the new dash, you could probally fit the files on a cdr or cdrw. But most other backups will be larger than 700Mb, so you'll need a DVD writer, but the drives are only sixty quid for a eight speed nowerdays. If you have any questions, which are boarderline legal, feel free to drop me a line outside the forum. Remember MoDaCo needs to stay 100% legal at all times, so no asking for iso's!
Guest Taoski Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 If you buy from premodded.co.uk you can specifiy the DVD drive you want (for £10 extra i think)
