Guest Jasonkruys Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 I have a bunch of MP3's encoded at VBR using LAME encoder. Is there a program (preferably freeware) that I can use to convert these to a more reasonable bitrate for use on the SPV, with minimal effort, all at once preferably? Failing that, what mp3 bitrate is best for the SPV, am I looking at 64kBps? Better/Worse? I downloaded the beta version of SmartMP3, which didnt work at all on my system, I have since tried to use the demo version of the final release to see if that works, but because I once installed the beta, I have no time left in the trial and it won't let me try it, an email to the authors has not had a reply :)
Guest Jasonkruys Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 This is of course assuming there are no better formats out there, with suitable players for the spv :?
Guest badboy4life Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 I use THIS software, its free and allows multiple conversions. Personally I think 64kbps is a bit low for MP3, I'd use at least 96kbps. I use wma's at 64kbps. Hope that helps.

Guest badboy4life Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 Yeah thats using the headphones, 64kbps should be ok if your using just the phone speaker.
Guest phonesmarts Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 well, i mean you can encode using Mp3Pro format, which is about 1/2 the size of a regular mp3 @ the same bitrate. e.g. mp3pro: .5 MB/min @ 64kbps (equivelent to 128 kbps) mp3: 1 mb/min @ 128 kbps
Guest T&A Man Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 I use Goldwave, which is shareware and excellent for re-encoding most audio files into virtually all other audio formats. ( http://www.goldwave.com/release.php ) At the moment I've encoded my MP3s into WMA's at around 130kbps VBR which are taking up about 40mb per album. I'm sure you could easily go below this bitrate and still have decent sound, especially if you're using the speakerphone or the headphone's that came with the SPV.
Guest phonesmarts Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 40 MB per album! You should reencode to Mp3Pro format. It should get you 20 MB per album on near CD-quality sound!
Guest T&A Man Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 What players will play MP3Pro files tho? I only use WMAs so that I can use Media Player - nice & simple :)
Guest phonesmarts Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 all players that support mp3s play mp3pros.
Guest T&A Man Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 Decided to actually have a look at MP3Pro (I ended up here). It looks like unless you're actually using a proper MP3Pro player then the tune you're playing will sound as bad as a similarly sized MP3. So the benefit of the smaller sized file is lost! Is this right? Does that mean I don't need to bother decoding/encoding my WMAs :D
