Hi,

Why doesnt the SPV play alot of MIDI files, is it becuase the SPV has a monophonic MIDI engine and cant deal with Polyphonic tones? as ive noticed the ringtones that come with the SPV are real crap. and when i try to use MIDIs as ringtones they dont work :)

You can only use MID0 format until you get to the E200

Thnx for your reply

Arha, and is that Mono or Polyphonuic and is there any software to convert standard .MID TO MIDI0 ?

I think that's a misspell, the Orange SPV E200 can play .mid files, probably .midi too, but I've never heard of .Midi0 or .Mid0!

no, that is correct, midi0 is another midi sound type, and is monophonic, they are still called .mid though.

And as mentioned, SPV/E100 are both midi0 only, MPX200 and E200 are midi1 meaning they can play polyphonic

Why have polyphonic when u can just play REAL sounds/music in .wav/.wma format :?:

...Because the reproduction quality is usually so poor because of the speaker limitations or whatever.

It is possible to make wav ringtones sound good on the Smartphone range but for clarity and punch you need MIDI files. My preference is for a ringtone that you can hear when the phone is in your jeans pocket. I don't want to listen to the whole chorus of a song before I answer. Do your friends wait that long before you answer ?

Yes, a lot of MIDI ringtones sound naff & cheesy but it can be done. I like a punchy techno-style sample that is just one line of a synth riff. The perfect ringtone IMHO is the MIDI version of the Prodigy's "Break & Enter" found on coolsmartphone.com - it's just the main riff repeated but what more do you want ? Something that tells you that the phone is ringing or a pocket jukebox ?

I'm actually using a wav of the old phone bell ringer but for my text alerts I'm using the Nokia crash tone I found on Airfagev's site. The point of the tone is the explosion at the end but it feels silly waitiing for it to end before clicking on Message. First time you get the laughs ; after that it just looks sad.

Now I've got a PC at home I'm gonna do some of the coolest MIDI tones that you will all apologise and accept that I was right all along !

 Sorry. :)

midnight, the mpx is not poly, sadly. it too, like the spv only supports mono. i don't know about the e200 though...

E200 seems to be polyphonic although I don't really understand the question.

Thing is, check the ringtone mentioned in my post above. It sounds fantastic on the SPV / E100 (and presumably on the Moto) but terrible on the E200 because of the format thang.

There again, someone posted the MPx200 MIDI ringtones and they sound great on all SPVs.

My ringtone sounds great (attached), that prodidgy one is awful and tbh i dont ever think it'll be possible to have a mid ringtone that would repalce any of my wavs. I'll have to make ya a decent wav version of break and enter to show ya what i mean  Then again u could prove me wrong

Which phone do you have, nedge2k ?

Like TanagerDave's (it is him ?) stuff in Simon Desser's thread, we all agree on just clipping the main hook / riff and repeating it. But I still think that without the vocal yours would sound better if the phone was actually playing the synth line. (is that how MIDI works ?)

Clearly you won't be able to reproduce the tonal quality of the original, but that Prodigy one at least captures the essence of the motif, which is quite attention-grabbing.

Then again I'm ignoring personal preference and the majority of people won't want a house / techno ringtone anyway. Let me get on with my project and we'll see what you think  :)

Ah yes, I thought I'd said that the "Break & Enter" MIDI sounded terrible on the E200

I converted it to MID0 and it sounded mint on my old SPV Canary and that's why I've still got this thing about MIDI ringtones :)

Watch this space....

Of all smartphones with 2002 OS, the only one that can play true polyphonic midis is the Mitac Mio 8380. Cuz Smartphone 2002 OS in itself dun play polyphonic midis at all. For the case of Mitac Mio8380, the reason it can play polyphonic midis is becuz it has it's own proprietary app ( called PhoneRing/Midi Player ) that can play midis in their true polyphonic nature. Even in the mio8380, if I go to Settings->Sound and tried to play the midi file there, it will sound crap, like what it will sound in E100 or mpx200. Thus I can conclude 2002 OS in itself can't play midis properly at all.

Why do people with WAV capable phones seek MIDI Tones, when people who own MIDI Only (poly or mono) crave WAV's to play ?

if youve got a e200 try the song in wma format, they sound a lot better, Ive got the ringtones of Prodigy - Breathe and Inner Circle - Bad Boys (the theme from cops) and they do sound much better than the wav files I used to use.

nah spv original here, we design for the base model.

i know that spv e100 cannot play midi of .mid file, so you better convert it to .wav files but it can eat a lot of space in your smartphone, but if you want, you can install smarttones to your SD or MMC.

Ummm..this MP3-to-MIDI conversion isn't as easy as I thought it would be...I may be on the verge of giving up.

You'd think at my age I'd know not to shoot my mouth off too quickly
