Guest Maxfarsigth Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 I have seen lots of threads and topics about the phone and its compatibility with the 900 gsm band, and what i understood is that the hardwere is locked and it can be tweaked and that the software that comes with the phone does not make it visible to choose the 900 band. I do not own the phone but was looking forward to buy one, the only thing stoping me its this. So, will some one please explain me a little about it?, im new to this but am very interested. Is the phone 900 band compatible? Should i wait for the mpx100 or 220? Thanx a lot...
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 Welcome to the site :) The UK mpx200 is tri-band but the US version is only dual-band. As for making the US phone tri-band, htere seems to be a mixed response with this. The rom that people use appears to show the 900 band but does not make it accessable.
Guest Maxfarsigth Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 Oh... to bad... ireally wanted a mpx200 the thing is that i live in venezuela... and here the service provider only uses GSM900... To bad well... guess ill wait for the mpx220 or something... By the way... i saw that people at Amazon.com sell the phone only and theyr product description says the phone is triband... I saw that today and instantly sent an email... they migth be replaying tomorrow or so... By the way, thanx for the help!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 It is only the mpx200 on AT&T in the US that is dualband the Amazon phones may well be from Eupoean stock.
Guest Maxfarsigth Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 I have been doing my researches and have found the follow concerning what iI first posted: I think its worth the reading, at least for the forum managers... - I contacted Amazon and they claim that the phones will only be compatible with the provider listed (of course they wont say that it can be unlocked and you can use whatever you want to) and that will only work under US domestic regions. I SAY--> You can use the phone anywere even if you are using a US service provider (of course youre gonna have to pay intl roaming). There are tons of people buying the MPX200 and using it under T-mobile. - What really concerns me about the phone is that if its compatible with GSM band 900. I talked with a guy at JustTalk.com from customer support: he said that the phone comes unlocked if I buy it without a service plan. Then I asked if they at JustTalk.com unlocked themselves the phones and he replyed that the phones where totally original and where sent directly from the manufacturer (but phones without service provider wont bring any SIM card). The same happened at Amazon.com, but they were much less explicit: they said that new phones without service plan were directly brought from the manufacturer but the diference was the following: they said "ATT, Tmobile phones shipped by amazon will contain a sim card that wil make them work". I SAY--> Aparently phones that motorola (U.S.) sales to stores and not to carriers are triband, but these phones wont bring a SIM card (of course no service provider). Then I ask my self: how will they work?. Will I need the Sim card to unlock the phone later?. Do i only have to unlock the phone if its under a service provider? - Later i talked with a guy that is selling an MPX200 outside U.S. (dunno why its a so cool phone). I asked if the phone was 900 band, if he bougth it to ATT and if it would be compatible to a provider with GSM900. He said: i can ensure that the phone will work under any GSM900 provider, in the box says this: "and he putted the Amazon editorial revew" I SAY--> <<>> Please id relly like people to reply saing if this is true, false or anything else... I really hope this is true.. at least it makes sence for me and its the only way for me to buy the phone... Im still contacting amazon and motorola for more datails. Thanx for youre atention!!!
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Basically correct, AT&T, Orange etc would have the phone custom made (to an extent) for their requirements with their own ROM image etc.
Guest abatis Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 A friend in the Philipines bought a ATTWS phone is the US. I sent him the original Moto generic rom and here is what he reports this morning. "It accepted my "Globe telecom 900mhz" simcard and is working so far so good....i'm trying to use it more extensively GPRS,MMS,etc... and will update you again " It seems this issue remains phone specific. This phone was bought in the Bay Area, CA
Guest coyspiracy Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 so, 900mhz does work. maybe i should reflash my new phone i just received a few days ago...should I?
Guest abatis Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 CO, Flashing of course is a personal choice and has risks. However, I have flashed one of my MPX's at least 8 times testing various ROM's with no adverse effect. I use Sprite to restore my programs and settings. The instance above is a documented success in my opinion. I may ask him if he would flash the new Euro ROM that I flashed my spare with and see if that also gives him 900 band. Anyway in his case it worked. If you are not afraid of losing the original ATT plugins flashing does give you the MMS which I use on T-mobile, DMTF fix, photo and camera etc. that is missing from ATT. I have not had one lick of trouble with the MMS client. I use to be against the flash until I did it especially the newer ROMS like the one posted on Modaco Home page. It works great once you change it to English.
Guest coyspiracy Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 you flashed it with the german rom?. well, how do you change it to english?. and does it have MMS and the 900mhz??
Guest abatis Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 To do this goto Programs > Settings (look for the settings Icon Einstellen..) > press 9 (for more) > Press 3 (regional settings). The language selection is the first block at the top, you will need to change it to U.S. English, then powercycle your phone. Once your phone is loaded back up go back to regional settings and change the Locale to U.S. English (this will not require a powercycle).
Guest Maxfarsigth Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 I am glad to say that I will soon be buyin my unloked and original MPX200. At last people at motorola answered after my 3rd intend, and they didnt evade my direct question, it was: "thankyou for your attention and great service but I still have a question: Id like to know what is the phone configuration from stores that sell the motorola MPX200 as new but without service plan?, does the phone support de GSM 900 band?, is it going to have any service provider logo or something on the back or front...?" They answered: "As per your reply, if you are interested in purchasing a tri-band MPX200, you would need to be sure that the phone is unlocked, that is not hooked-up for AT&T who blocked the 900MHz frequency. You may check for SIM-unlocked phones at the links bellow: http://gadgetfreeks.com/mompsm.html http://www.welectronics.com/gsm/motorolampx200.asp I hope this information has been of your help. I really appreciate your patience." Im glad motorola could finally give some usefull info. At the time im considering buyin the phone at welectrocis.com... the page doesnt look much trust but im paying with pay pal... Im still considering the E-Bay option. Too bad people at amazon dindt help, its almost sure their phone without service plan is also triband, but they dindt what to ensure... --->Conclution: the phone motorola sells defenetly is triband, there arent two models of the phone, the only is that when the manufacturer sells the phone to a telephone company such as ATT, they will turn their phones into theyr market needs. The only problem so far is that it is highly probable that the new phone from welectronics will come with the 2002 OS. While at Ebay you may find it Unlocked and with the 2003 OS. I would apreciate any suggestions. Thanks for reading. This "So is it finally posible to run the MPX200 in GSM 900 ?" thread-investigation is almost over... of course i will post finally if iI bought the phone and if its 100% or at least satisfactory workin on my city.
