Digital wireless technology specialist TTPCom joined forces with China’s leading mobile phone manufacturer, TCL Mobile Communication Ltd, for the project. They have launched the MicrosoftWindows Mobile-based OCO1 Smartphone, a dual band (900/1800 MHz) product. The smartphone includes TTPCom’s GPRS class 10 protocol software, Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 software for Smartphones, chipsets supplied by Analog Devices, and features an embedded digital camera, a 262k colour main display, 4k sub-display, 32 MB internal memory and full multimedia support, including MP3 and MPEG4. A triband version is also under development and is scheduled for launch in 2005. TTPCom and TCL have been collaborating closely for a number of years and work on the OCO1 Smartphone started in late 2003. The rapid development of the new product has been facilitated by a number of factors. One is the location of a dedicated team of TTPCom’s engineers at TCL’s site in Huizhou, China, who assist with the transfer of wireless expertise between the two companies. Another is TTPCom’s platform approach that enables a range of phones to be developed using the same core technology. Simon Du, executive VP at TCL, said: “With TTPCom as our lead technology platform we are well-placed to strengthen our market in China and improve our position in export markets. “This year we expect to export handsets to a number of major markets including South East Asia, Russia and Africa.” He added, “TTPCom have provided a very clear roadmap for future technologies and their extensive expertise in the GSM market is enabling us to rapidly expand our range of wireless products.” Richard Walker, managing director of TTPCom’s Software Business Unit, said the company had been working extensively with Microsoft to implement a solution “that works ‘out of the box’ and upgrades of our tools are closely coupled with updates and modifications for all Microsoft Windows Mobile products.” Key to note 262k screen 3D engine Built in camera Please continue in original MoDaCo thread <> Edit More info on this phone: As yet this handset has not been released The phone will be branded TCL e777 TCL are looking at launching this smartphone in the us at some point next year www.forbes.com
