Guest kyrkesmith Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 Has anyone experienced this, or know what to do? The phone is running unbelieveably slowly, and takes about 5 seconds to bring up the Programs menu, for example. System Info says that 74% of the RAM is used, 62% Program and 95% Storage. I assume this is part of the problem? However, almost all of the storage is Calendar appointments. Is there a quick way to remove appointments that are, for example, more than 2 weeks old.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 Try a reboot or to end any apps running in the background with Task Manager from www.binarys.com
Guest kyrkesmith Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 I've done both already to little avail.
Guest MadSci Posted June 17, 2004 Report Posted June 17, 2004 I had serious issues like this. They seemed to be related to the available memory, and in some cases, the amount of free space on the SD card. If you are running apps from the card, or that store data on the card, this seems to be important. I am just guessing, but it looks like a portion of the SD card is used as a 'cache', rather like a virtual ROM, that has to be large enough if you want things to run smoothly. If your card is in use, look at how much free space is still there. If it's under 5% (an arbitrary number that worked for me) then consider freeing things up. I also solved some problems by carefully removing apps that I could live without. In some cases, the effects were sudden and dramatic. Unfortunately I didn't keep a record of aggregious offenders. If your memory is 'clogged' by old calendar appointments, then consider getting rid of them in the software you are synchronizing with. Most desktop calendar software allow this, often by 'archiving' older appointments. Good luck! MadSci
Guest squall Posted June 17, 2004 Report Posted June 17, 2004 I do periodic hard resets to keep the phone running nice (well when i keep a smartphone for longer than a month :D ) I think its good admin if nothing else, as it also means i take regular backups, and have files organised ready to reinstall. At one point i did have issues as you have described and a hard reset did sort things thankfully. :D
Guest MrMagoo Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 you might also want to try the standard tech support response of turn it off and remove the battery for 30 seconds. This is not just them bullshitting - the power off button does not actually completely shut down the system , but goes into a suspend state. Now before it does this, it sends a close message to all apps, but if they do not close (rogues etc.) , they can still be running after a soft reboot. (I know this for a fact because i wrote a dodgy program which got into an infinite loop and a soft reset did not kill it, but removing the battery did) Taking the battery out for a while seems to be a way of actually powering off, as does a hard reset. I am not saying this will definitely fix your problem , but its worth a try :D
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 19, 2004 Report Posted June 19, 2004 The power off button does shut down the system, I posted about this in the early days of the site and this has been confirmed by MS as well. Unlike the ppc that do go into a suspension mode when the power button is pressed, the phone's OS is shut down hense the time it takes to start the phone up. Obviously cetain parts of the phone still have power supplied to them, otherwise you would not be able to restart the phone again but the OS it's self is not running.
Guest Belgarath Krall Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 There is an option under activesync to change the length of time for past calendar appointments (i've got mine at 4 weeks, I have a pretty full calendar) other than that may I suggest custom cabbage for so good ole tweaky goodness :D
Guest kyrkesmith Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 If you change that setting, does it automatically clear out ones older than that length of time?
Guest kyrkesmith Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Answer: yes. It must be something else slowing down the phone. There doesn't seem to be much I can remove - all that's installed extra is Smartexplorer and Registry Editor. What do you reckon, should I move them to the SD card or something?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 I always say to install everything to the the storage card. Check the IPSM MAPI folder this contains your sent emails and txts so unless you want to keep them this folders contents can be deleted as that's one place that can get a bit full.
