SPV or 6600?

Well, actually what I want to know is do I go for a Microsoft smartphone or Symbian version?

I know most people here will be biased towards the Microsoft but please hear me out.

I am new to the smartphone world and I am looking for a new phone but I want it to be able to emulate nes and gb games. Before I get banned from posting about this topic let me say that I have only a handful of games which I have rom'd myself from my legally owned originals so I can play them on the train on my laptop. What I want to know is how good the emulators are for the smartphones and how easy they are to use.

Any advice would be greatful.

Thanks,

Matt

I've been considering a 6600 but there's no stereo playback for music, which is a massive drawback AFAIK.

Dont know about emulators, you could check www.my-symbian.com/forum for details

Symbian Series 60 has a huge amount of software available, is a stable OS, and the 6600 is quite a nice phone (not the one for me, but quite nice all the same - camera is much better than the one on my P900 especially)

I have both and to be honest the 6600 is now pretty much redundant. Yes there is a lot of content available for the series60/symbian platform but 95% of it is gimmicky imo.

I would reccomend the SPV as I think the future and market for windows smartphones looks very bright indeed whereby the series60 market seems to be very static and all the phones are very simillar but just don't seem to match up to the capability of the Windows mobiles.

I'd say exactly the opposite!

It's about time that networks (or somebody!) let us have a phone to play with for a month or so to see if we liked it. Using one yourself is the only way to tell

I have been looking into a similar issue - C500 or 7610. I am seesawing at the mo between the 2 but apparently the 7610 doesn't have stereo output on the mp3 player, and even dual mono is a pain! Also the mp3 player doesn't like players encoded at high sample rates - thought to be a software problem but shows that MS powered mobiles are not the only ones releaesed with bugs. I am going to wait until both are released (soon, hopefully!) look at them in the shop and then buy whichever one takes my fancy. Unscientific I know but hey, I'm a shallow guy.

BTW surely the 7610 is nicer than the 6600?

As a phone, it pains me to say the 6600 is far better IMO. Better battery life, voice quality and stability. Plastics a bit cheap though.

For features, flexibility, applications etc. the MS Smartphone is way ahead of everything else.

I'm also hearing from a carrier that the early MPX220 test samples are suffering the same battery life issues as the current E200 and they still need to be charged daily and I don't find that acceptable in a phone. I only hope they find a resolution to this before release.

Lets hope that someone can build an MS Smartphone that can be a phone first and PDA/Gadget/Games machine second.

As someone who wants to use it as a business device it is a far bigger priority to have battery and stability than whether it can run 3D games!

I read your comments when I was considering the 7610 (I think I PM'd you at the time) and was wondering do you still stand by your criticisms of the phone and operating system? You were pretty damning and that has pretty much made up my mind to go for the C500 when it is released but they were obviously early experiences. I am assuming that on prolonged use you still thought it was pretty pants?

Hi Dr Who.

I tried to PM you back but the modaco system will not let me. I contacted Paul and he said it's because you have illegal characters in your username. Change it from "Dr, Who?" to "Dr Who" and then I can reply to you personally.

For smartphone users it seems as there is no 'best compromise' product out there. In an ideal world I'd like the stability and software of the Symbian system in my phone, out-of-the-box Java and decent MMS support, together with ability to play MP3s in stereo. Oh, and something that is a good phone first and foremost! A battery life marginally better than 24 hours would be nice too.

I had pegged the MPx220 as my next phone but even then, I'm not sure how slick WM2003 is (or SE will be) against Symbian.

It will be interesting to see how good symbian second edition is.

Cheers Pagemakers, I have updated my user name to Dr Who. If you still have problems I'll just enable the 'post email' part in my profile. Many thanks.

Still no good. Look at your username it's still Dr, Who?

Maybe you need to talk to Paul directly...

At the bottom of my previous post (and maybe this one?) is a box marked email (next to the profile and pm boxes), that when I click on it opens up Outlook with my REAL email address in it. At least it does on my PC. Tried changing my user name but didn't change the characters displayed. Cheers for trying anyway, bro. My email is [email protected], you can try that if you like?

Ok I sent you an email. I think you will have to ask Paul to change your username otherwise nobody can PM you.

Cheers midnight, just hope that next time I clear my cookies I remember to login as Dr Who and not Dr, Who?. I normally end up spending about 15 minutes trying to login to sites anyway, using every permutation and combination of names and passwords I can think of. Grrrrrr.

Getting back on topic I am still undecided about symbian vs microsoft (or should that be Nokia vs HTC?). I am currently thinking the C500 could be the dogs danglies provided I can get 3 days standby or a good few hours talktime/use with the screen on. Oh yeah, and hopefully it won't turn off several times a day like my E100. Has nobody on Modaco got their hands on one of these little fellas yet?

We want information!

Peace
