Searching for contacts with a second or third tap

I'm a bit of a newbie, both to the phone and the forum (in fact, reading through this forum helped me make the decision to buy the phone) and I thought I saw this question asked somewhere but now I can't find it.

Anyway, I can't figure out how to search for contacts starting with a letter other than the first one on a key (o, for example). I've tried multiple presses at different intervals, but the best I can get is to have the O listings underneath the M listings. Is there a way to search more efficiently, so I don't have to scroll all the way down my list? Similarly, is there an option or registry key to disable searching on the first name?
