As I'm working with different vendor ROMs on my E200, it would be nice if I could take the parts I like from the Orange ROM with me, e.g. the new plugins. Since this would be for my use only I don't believe it would be a legal issue as I should have a right-to-use license for the code since I purchased the device and the files will only run on that device.

That being said, and before I start really digging into this, has anyone been able to do something similar, i.e. cataloged the plugins, reg entries for classIDs, etc and successfully copied from the ROM FS?

hehe, wanna bet??????

you think its legal to copy files from one device (which are code signed and protected) from one device to another? i very much doubt Orange will think that way. You are licensed to use the software the way it was intended (ie on an Orange device with an Orange rom), you dont actually own the software.

So, legally i'd say, kinda naughty, practically, very hard cos its code signed to only work with that rom.

Also, rom hacking is an iffy one, because you are modifying the original, which in itself is illegal. You are from the US though so you could try the 'fair use' argument (theres no such fair use law in the UK)

Ah no, this is on the same device - I'm not looking to do something naughty. :D

It's more along the lines of: Assume I put another ROM version on my full-boat-retail, bought and paid for E200 (that's really the shady part). I like the plugins that came with the device I bought and would like to continue to use them on the same device. :D

No intention to re-distribute as I have opinions about copyright infringement, illegal distribution and the like...
