Guest dvdpete Posted July 9, 2004 Report Posted July 9, 2004 Hi chaps, a newbie here. I've done my research and have narrowed my choice down to 2 phones on Orange, but I'm stuck on the final choice. Could anyone offer some pointers to the following questions, in relation to my shortlist of the SPV E500 and the M1000? 1) I need a device that functions as both a PDA and Phone, and should be comfortable to use. 2) I need GPRS access for rich internet browsing. 3) I want to be able to add external devices - such as a GPS receiver (for if/when TomTom bring out Sat Nav for smartphones. 4) I would like the ability to listen to the radio, but MP3 playback would do. 5) I need to use MSN, but require an SMS notification to activate it, instead of using GPRS packets to keep alive (I'm paying the bill!). 6) I'm not bothered about a camera (unless it's at least 3mpixels!) 7) Battery life should be good, with short boot times. 8) I need to be able to open email attachments (typically PDF & MS Office) 9) It would be nice to be able to create MS Office docs too. Any advice greatfully received in this minefield! Thanks Pete.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted July 9, 2004 Report Posted July 9, 2004 For what you want the M1000 is the device for you as it's also a Pocket PC wich has Word and Excel support. When you say E500 I presume you mean E200 or the new C500.
Guest Brody Posted July 13, 2004 Report Posted July 13, 2004 I'd guess he means the C500 as it looks like it might get renamed when launched>> http://www.msmobilenews.com/?cid=571
Guest dvdpete Posted July 13, 2004 Report Posted July 13, 2004 Thanks guys - Sorry I've been away. Yes, I mean the C500. The only thing that is keeping me away from the M1000 is the size in comparison to a phone. I'm not sure if I'll like having a PDA held to the side of my head. Has anyone got one and what's it like to use as a phone? Thanks, Pete
Guest Brody Posted July 13, 2004 Report Posted July 13, 2004 See my M1000 review here: http://www.msmobilenews.com/?cid=454 Don't forget you can use a Bluetooth headset for making and receiving calls...
Guest dvdpete Posted July 13, 2004 Report Posted July 13, 2004 Thanks for that! What a comprehensive review! I'm not bothered about the camera specs. Is there a similar pre launch review on the C500 anywhere? Thanks, Pete
Guest Brody Posted July 13, 2004 Report Posted July 13, 2004 Hehe, i'm working on it! Not yet though i'm afraid :D W@ Mob magazine did publish a review, the key points of which can be found here: http://www.msmobilenews.com/?cid=569
Guest fluffstardx Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 Well, i'm waiting for Orange to contact me with the upgrade costs for both phones; hopefully i'll get them before the weekend, and if i do i'll post them up. If not- well, i'll post em when i do :P Personally i really want a M1000, but if it's hugely pricy i'll get the E500. Edit: prices are up on mobilesuk.net, and they're nice. Look here. Turns out i'm looking at £123, which is a lot less than i thought seeing as the handset alone's £495 on ebay...
