Guest Will Posted July 13, 2004 Report Posted July 13, 2004 Hi all, it seems that a feature i want is not really publicised for adsl wifi routers, i want to be able to use the router function of unit, for a while - as i am on cable. Then switch to adsl at some point in the future. Some adsl routers seem to have a passthru mode to disable to adsl modem, but which ones? Any help appreciated. Will
Guest beersoft Posted July 13, 2004 Report Posted July 13, 2004 the draytek ones do (i think), i know the isdn/dsl/vpn/coffee maker ones do router without the dsl but you know im a big fan of them :D later Owen
Guest Gorskar Posted July 16, 2004 Report Posted July 16, 2004 they do routing on the ISDN port if they have it, not one of the ethernet ports. In general ADSL routers expect the WAN interface to be the line port, not an ethernet port, so you wont be able to use them to route for cable. I've used a fair few ADSL routers (I've got a draytek myself), and never seen this feature. Possibly one of the expensive Zytels or Ciscos may be able to, but then you're really chucking out money, which for consumer purposes I wouldnt want! You could get a "broadband" wireless router with an ethernet WAN port, (which would work with cable) and then add in an ADSL modem with an ethernet port afterwards, such as the Dlink 300T, or the X-modem. That of course is more expensive than an all in one device, but probably cheaper than any router that can do routing for both ADSL and ethernet WAN intefaces.
