What to do with an old smartphone?

So, the C500 is coming and we are all going to upgrade. So what can I do with my old E100? I can't use it as a universal remote control, so can any of the more tech minded of the community come up with interesting suggestions? Could use it as a small screened gameboy/emulator or as a fancy MP3 player - anyone any ideas how to turn it into a mini media centre??? I mean this thing is more powerful than the desktop I had a few years ago so there must be some funky hack/linux kernel/something that can be done?

The selling route is just a bit dull though. I actually never sell on any of my old phones, I like to take them out and laugh at them from time to time. I just thought with the assembled thought power of the modaco crowd we could come up with somthing a leetle more interesting?

In the face of such philanthropic suggestion I now feel a little ashamed

Doesn't Squall look for old or broken smartphones? Not sure what he does with them, but I'm sure it would benefit the site, and all of us in the long run! He can have my old SPV when I next upgrade.

:P

I do hardware mods on phones. Pictures guides etc will be posted on my new site pretty soon.

I buy smartphones for a small amount. If you are looking to get rid of a phone pm me and i will give you a price based on what you have. I cant offer a large amount as i dont sell the phones on, unless i destroy one and sell the parts :D

So what do you do to your phones, Squall? This was really the point of this thread - I am interested in what one can do with the hardware once you have stopped using it as a phone.

Im developing a car kit.

I fitted internal camera to e100, and fitted that to a e200 case.

Im doing guides on how to strip each htc smartphone, with pics etc.

Im doing a guide on part compatability, ie if the spv screen works in e100 (it does)

Im trying to work out what all the pins do on the bottom of the phone.

and other things im not ready to tell people about yet.

Groovy, man.

I was wondering if, say, it was possible to run the hardware as a games emulator using the basic OS but take the screen signal and output it elsewhere. I am guessing one would need to put the signal through a box of tricks to allow the signal to go to a monitor for instance (I realise the res would be very low) but I was just wondering whether it was *theoretically* possible.

I thought about something similar using a laptop screen. Could work. The display size on the lappy screen would be the same size as phone unless you did something really fancy

lok of work and not really giving any benifits

Ah, I see - I hadn't really appreciated the screen size thing - I had imagined that it would fill the screen just at a low res. Maybe I will continue to distract myself with the thought of turning my Xbox into a media centre........

Peace

Squall.

If you can figure out a way to mod the car chargers for an spv100 to allow it to charge a spv200 you'de make a fortune.

I've been waiting since the beginning of July for orange to get some in.

Getting a bit fed up that they decided to charge the pin config between models rendering the spv100 accessories useless.

:x :x :x

i noticed another thread a few days back about the new ipod IR remote control thing, and someone had the idea of modding an an spv to include a better IR transmitter and connecting it to the audio out jack of the spv, then you could play IR sounds out of the audio jack to make it act as a remote. Then someone would ahve to write a program to play the sounds (ie .wavs). So basically turn the phone into a universal remote.

Had a go at O today about that -

the charger for the 100 not fitting the 200 - having to buy new equiptment.

" Sir - you chose to upgrade!"

so what doesnt work? does it physically not fit? have you tried it back to front?

the ir thing seems unworkable to me, for private developers anyway, dare say a regular company could
