MPx220 - And Megapixel Camera Phones

Give me less pixels, but better quality, any day!!!

Until camera phones are fitted with decent "real" lenses, and improved processing capabilities, the pictures will always be at best, very average

Increasing the output to 1 Million pixels, as with the MPx220, simply exaggerates the problem

We've seen the recent pictures taken with the MPx220, and although it's not the finished product, I doubt whether the camera will be drastically improved :?

Here's some pictures taken with a real camera, but at a much lower resoltion. This just proves that VGA (640 x 480) or even 320 x 240 pixels CAN be more than adequate, if the camera is up to it :!:

I know which I'd rather have :P

Fingers crossed the C500 might come up trumps :?: :!:

But how does the consumer know what phones have a 'good' lens, or for that matter, a shite lens? Is there any empirical measurement which determines a good or bad set-up?

I'm not aware of any phones (yet) in the UK with a decent lens/processor set up, but I'm pretty sure that they exist in Japan :P

I'm sure I've read about Japanese camera phones with with "real" lenses and optics that actually move to focus and zoom 8)

Hopefully it's only a matter of time before we see them :?: :D

First optical zoom camera phone here: http://www.i4u.com/article1736.html

I totally agree with Simon btw, film cameras don't produce huge photos when you get them developed (you choose not to get them developed huge), a decent 640*480 photo would be great! I believe that the C500's camera is the same unit as the E200 unfortunately but I am informed that the refresh rate will be far improved and the reaction time between hitting the "take picture" button and the camera actually taking the picture is far improved to the point of being almost instatanious, lets hope so!

Exactly, i think the point is we want to HAVE a decent lens, which isn't what we have at the moment. When i go shopping for digital camera's then to be brutally honest i don't pay any attnetion to the lens type, i assume it is up to the job of taking good pictures. The same should go for phones if they are to continue to incorparate cameras in their design (of course it could just be a ploy by manufacturers like Sony so as not to start crippling their low end digicam market :P)

Surely the raison d'etre of a cmaera phone is to be able to send MMS's that won't look too bad on a phone screen - not take magazine-quality images? If I wanted to do that, I'd go out and buy a half decent digital camera.

Agreed to some extent but as the MP's rise on camera phones so should the quality surely?!

Why? When hopefully soon you can incorporate a half-decent digital camera in a phone. Save you having to lug another piece of equipment around with you.

Exactly what we were talking about in the pub all weekend !

I think that's a pretty general assumption

Yes there is convergence, but in the same way that my E100 plays MP3s it doesn't stop me lusting after an iPod...

convergence is a natural process, as things get smaller and we can pack more memory into smaller and cheaper flash cards, and we get better batteries things will just naturally converge. We are already seeing how phones can act as music players and how we have just started to see a proper camera with optical zoom in a mobile...its only a matter of time before we will all carry one device that we use as a phone/camera/music player that will do just as good a job as a midrange camera and things such as the ipod.

Might do as good a job but not necessarily be as good to use. I mean, the iPod didn't invent the MP3 player format, it just made it so much better thanks to some intelligent design. Convergence leads to comprised designs.

heh someone ridiculed me fo saying i thought the xda2 camera would be as good as the 1.2/1.3 mpx cameras a while back. maybe not as daft as some of the stuff i say :P

After seeing the review of the S700 on Mobile-Review of S700 I'm very impressed. Although bad in poor light (like many cam's) it will be the best digital camera in a phone to date. The preview pictures are very impressive.

I don’t enjoy seeing non-MS phones coming out tops but this one will definitely play a part in my next phone choice.
