Guest McHale Posted July 19, 2004 Report Posted July 19, 2004 2 simple points why I won't be upgrading to anything Motorola for a while: Mpx220: MPx220 has mini-SD card slot so eventually possible usage of SDIO cards for Wi-Fi would not be possible (in fact - as Motorola told us - there will be no Wi-Fi add-on for MPx220) Wi-Fi. Motorola, rumor has it that this wireless network thingy will be kinda nifty and someone may want it. "Way to go!" for screwing that up in the MPx220 (yet promising it in the MPx100 which is now defunct). MPx: S L O W processor and no space to actually use it as a PPC. I want to upgrade, not downgrade... especially at THOSE prices! I don't know if they are going to continue to offer products missing key features hoping that people will continue to upgrade in the future (e.g. MPx200 not having camera or BT) but I'm going to buy the first smartphone with some form of WiFi support - even if it's Nokia. I'm sick of carrying two devices and I'm sick of waiting. -Mc
Guest midnight Posted July 19, 2004 Report Posted July 19, 2004 are you sure the MPx processor is slow? from what i've heard its pretty nippy. NEVER go off mhz rating alone, its practically irrelevant these days, what you need is other benchmarks like MIPS ratings, and find out what kind of built in multimedia acceleration it has etc. as for the MPx220 having mini SD, many of the new smartphones, MS, Nokia, Samsung etc. are coming out with mini SD (in fact its even worse for the Nokia's, theyve never really supported SD and have supported MMC instaed , which seems to continue with them using RS MMC). The MPx100 will also come with a Mini SD slot, so theres virtually no difference between the MPx220 and MPx100 appart from the form factor. MPx100 isnt defunct by the way, its merely been postponed, and from what i heard with this delay they may improve/change some of the specs.
Guest chrisc28 Posted July 19, 2004 Report Posted July 19, 2004 The controversy over offering WiFi can be attributed to recent reports stating how operators are pressuring phone makers like Motorola and Nokia to stop the release of phones with WiFi. As you might know, WiFi in phones means less GPRS data revenue for many mobile operators. So, this might be an issue with the operators and not the phone manufacturers.
Guest emh Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 A phone is a relatively short 1-year commitment for most people (and a significantly shorter one for many on here :P ). No point waiting for the "perfect phone" with "all" the features... by the time that comes out, there'll be new features to wait for. At least, that's my take...
Guest McHale Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 if the MPx isn't slow and they actually give space to install a lot of apps, I could deal with it (though, the next version in the a630 form factor sounds cool). But the MPx100 promised a WiFi addon but they never mentioned it for the MPx220. If what I quoted was true and there will be no WiFi option, the phone, although a great phone, is still lacking WiFi which is everywhere. I WANT MY WIFI PHONE!!!! :P -Mc
Guest fasteye Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 WiFi = No battery life I would only see WiFi as useful for using VoIP to save money and there is no Smartphone software for this yet. Other than that I'm happy to wait for proper UMTS (3G) which is well on the way with most carriers now. Why is it you want WiFi? Just nosey ;-)

Just nosey ;-) theres plenty of uses for wifi, using the internet being one, using broadband connection from your smartphone/pocketpc via a pc internet connection rocks, much better than the (in my eyes) overrated 3G connection (which doesnt look to be that cheap on the main carriers either). oh, and if you are talking about the MPx, then there is VoIP software available cos thats pocket pc :P gotta agree it kills battery life though
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 The carriers will never accept it in a "mainstream" handset being marketed as a phone, too risky to loose large amounts of revenue...
Guest beersoft Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 you can have a wifi phone if you want here but you have to live with the 80's styling and them cooking your body parts when you use them. I have some in my office at work and they rock (so i've been told) but they don't let me play with the new toys due to the storys of my meet adventures :P later Owen
Guest fasteye Posted July 21, 2004 Report Posted July 21, 2004 I wouldn't favour using WiFi in a phone or PDA at home if I've got a PC or Laptop with Broadband or WiFi connection where I can do things quicker and with a proper screen, mouse and keyboard. If you want to do this kind of thing it's better to buy a couple of Bluetooth Access Points and use those round the house to pair to. Internet browsing is easily capable on EDGE or UMTS (3G) devices without the need for WiFi. Yes it's expensive today but then so are Hotspots and they don't have the coverage or consistant billing. Given time the costs will come down and coverage of the carriers services will improve. Agree carriers will never sanction WiFi in phones and they are the sales point for these devices so have the ability to drive handset manufacturers roadmaps It is a huge financial risk to them going down that road and they were reluctant to get involved in setting up hotspots.
Guest McHale Posted July 21, 2004 Report Posted July 21, 2004 I'm not looking at WiFi as a mandatory option for use as a way for VoIP (would be nice, but not the reason). I find myself in airports, coffee shops, my own home, malls, etc. and there is WiFi. WiFi is MUCH faster and MUCH cheaper for internet and I really want to take advantage of it. Currently, I'm lugging my iPAQ 5555 and at least one or two cell phones everywhere I go (one is the Nokia 6800 - I love QWERTY). A PPC phone with WiFi or a Smartphone with WiFi would be ideal for what I want. I'm positive there are many more like me in the same situation as well. I don't use GPRS due to the high costs. Actually, I'd use it more than I do now but Cingular can't put it on my account because they can't figure out how to add it in their system with the other system options I have (morons). The author of WiFiFoFum is porting it to MS Smartphone as soon as he gets a working SD WiFi card for his e200. cooooooooooool :P Anyway, I contacted Motorola and asked about WiFi for the MPx220 and they gave me a phone number called their "Developers Hotline." I may give them a call and vent... WI-Fi, WI-Fi, WI-Fi. It's here. It's popular. It's everywhere... but in the smartphones. :D -Mc
