Guest fraser Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 Sorry! This topic is back again. But with good cause!! Has anyone seen this? It's a gadget to let you use your Ipod as a remote control. It's also discussed on Slashdot. The device is an IR transiever that interfaces using audio (a 3.5mm jack by the looks of it). It will work with any device that has audio input/output. The SPV does. Thoughts anyone? The software looks to be PocketPC, so it could be ported.
Guest squall Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 Think you would prob need smartphone drivers or something to make this work. Besides y would you want to? another way to eat battery life. I know id never use this
Guest fraser Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 Sort of, on the drivers. You'd just need the application itself. All it does is plays sounds (possibly something like DTMF, the sounds a phone keypad makes to dial) and the device converts the sound into IR codes. Smartphones have everything they need already.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 Yep, looks good, all you have to do is use WMP to play the ir "sounds" :P
Guest nedge2k Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 Or just make an app to play dtmf's :P This does sound quite promising. If someone made an app to play the various sounds i'd be up for buying it. Maybe modaco could negotiate a discount for plus members???
Guest londonlad Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 if you read the advanced topics, we might be better off making one with the wire of some old headphones (or maybe handsfree) and a led tranreciever!? That way you can hide it in the leather case of your phone. cheaper too. best thing would be if you can send sound through the built-in infrared

Hmm, interesting. I quite like the odd bit of hacking (not the media use of the word, the hobbyist use). The idea of building this sort of thing into the phone is very tempting!! If you can find the space inside, you could mount the IR device alongside the existing one, and just spice off the audio connector so that you can still use headphones.
Guest Dr Who Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 A universal remote control - is this the future of my E100 when I change it in for a new phone???
