Guest Pigo Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 now THIS is a smartphone!!!!!!! it's based on microsoft smartphone but they altered it somehow. touchscreen!, 88 x 52 x 21 mm (H x W x D) and only weighs 86g now that is something I'm willing to buy. it's small and affordable! 520 euro's! my chunck of moto cost me 600!! check out the website for more info: Neonode N1
Guest midnight Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 err, it isnt based on MS Smartphone, but it is based on the Windows CE 4.2 os (same as other Windows Mobile 2003 os phones and pocket pc's), it is pretty neat however :P
Guest Vector Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Yep, seen it before, does look VERY nice tho :P
Guest Pigo Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Oops! sorry. I seems I mis-read the info on infosync. indeed it's based on CE. but still a great looking phone. I'm trying to get all the possible information I can get. really interested in it. this time I'm including a pic. so everybody can see what it looks like.neonode_n1_02.jpg
Guest kurtfhouse Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Yeah I've been keeping an eye on this for about a year! (or more) Looks like its finally on its way though, just 4 points: No bluetooth which is a real shame bearing in mind how long they've been working on it :D There appears to be no internal memeory on the device with everything being on the storage card They are only going to make about 1000 this summer which have all already been allocated to Swedish customers who pre-ordered many moons ago (even these will need rom upgrades with not all functions implemented yet), they do say that they are hoping to increase production speed but I don't see anyone outside Sweden getting one this year especially bearing in mind their previous track record for development speed :P NO VIBRATING alert! An essential for me, I rely on that when I'm out in a noisey bar or shopping, at work occasionallyand many other times as do many other people, a shocking oversight, even the cheapest bog standard handsets have a vibrate function  I think that most smartphone enthusiasts will have upgraded to the MPx220 or C500 by the time its widely available so they may miss the boat (again, they alraedy seem to have had to upgrade the processor from 133mhz to 220mhz where development has taken so long). A real shame as the device sounds like it had a lot of potential
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Is it just me that thinks this is the same phone they show at the end of big brother with the text-to-vote numbers?
Guest midnight Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 I think the market for this is actually quite different to the other smartphones out there. This IS NOT a business phone. The market they are aiming for is the trendy youth market, those who want something that bit different. The touchscreen is not like any other touchscreen and uses the patented zForce touchscreen method. Basically, it doesnt work from pressure on the screen, instead it detects movement over the screen (uses optical sensors), so pracically zero pressure is needed on the screen. The cool thing is it can register more than one keypress at once, which is cool for gaming, and, texting speed is increased. Everything on the touchscreen is either controlled by a press or a sweep. For example, there are three icons across the bottom, programs, keypad and tools. All you do is press the icon, then drag your finger/thumb upwards to just over half way then let go and that menu appears. Same goes for yes/no answers, left to right sweep=yes, right to left sweep=no. It's all pretty clever really :D The only things missing i can see are vibrate and BT, but rumours are they will be in the N2. Good to see they uprated the processor (not just the speed, they changed from a MiMagic 3 processor to a MiMagic 5 processor) Also, this thing is pretty cool for developers, a simple recompile (plus tweaks to the navigation) is usually all thats needed to get a pocketpc or smartphone app/game working. The photo's it takes aint bad either :P Oh, and Pigo, that pic is of the old N1, the new black one looks sleeker to me (its on the neonode website)
Guest gravity Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Midnight I told you this phone was gonna fail, and lack of compatability with smartphone and pocket pc apps will make sure of it. I know they aren't going for the big piece of the pie, but the thing is, unless it sells well, no one will develop for it.
Guest midnight Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 errr, it isnt incompatible as such though, as i said, recompile, thats it. If you are clever with the controls, its a 10 minute job. ms smartphone isnt compatible with pocket pc is it???? At least this thing (with some scren res tweaking) is more compatable with PocketPC than MS Smartphone is due to the touchscreen. they have already sold more than they can produce, so how is that a failure? (a failure in meeting demand maybe, but definitely not a failure as in the phone isnt selling enough, isnt good enough or no-one wants it) as i've mentioned before, and you've mentioned again, they arent trying to compete with Nokia, Samsung, Motorola etc. so they know, and we know, they are not gonna sell as many phones as the top companies do. Ngage is a failure.... why? cos Nokia sold nowheer near the expected amount, Neonode so far are on track to meet their sales targets. You think MS Smartphone is a success?????? hardly.
Guest kurtfhouse Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Just to clarify, I think this is a brilliant phone and as Midnight points out having an over demand is not failing, its just frustrating that they can't keep up :P If this phone had vibrate I would probably buy it (and a 1GB sd card!) especially with what has just been said with regards to software development (that side of things didin't cross my mind before as I'm not a developer and no NOTHING about programming  ) I personally can live without bluetooth, never fancied one of those headsets and am happy to connect to my phone to my laptop via cable. Neonode have come a long way, originally the N1 needed to have the headset plugged in for calls aswell but they have listened to their potential customers Midnight, where did you get the info regarding the N2 (sorry if its on their web site must have missed it  )
Guest midnight Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 just from various places on the web, ive been following the N1 for quite some time so know quite a lot about it (even if some of it is just rumour) :P oh, and one thing it has, which for some reason everyone wants..... the IR can do TV remote functions (as soon as an app is made to do it) Backtalking is a cool idea, no greasy screen, but, it does kinda show who you are talking to on the caller display :D
Guest londonlad Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 this thing is pretty cool. anyone got know the exact size of it? Dont like the big X though, like its something out of xmen... ...incoming call from cyclops
Guest dshaugney Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 likewise I remeber I was waiting for this phone back in college about a year or two ago. Now I'd still buy this phone if it had vibrate because it's so small. I'm waiting to see what the C500 feels like in my hand and if the price is right it may just replace my mpx200.
Guest midnight Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 thats the joypad :P and the size is mentioned in the first post, if you want a comparison, check out..... http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=1102...r=asc&start=120
Guest Pondrew Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Slightly off topic but I just checked out the Neonode site and just been listening to Neoradio (radio feed on the Neonode site). Superb song called Girlfriend that I've never heard before. Very different but top song. Might add the Neo sight to my favourites just for the radiofeed!
Guest kl1wdr Posted July 30, 2004 Report Posted July 30, 2004 The photo's it takes aint bad either :P Are there some on the web for us to see? I am really curious... :D
Guest gravity Posted July 30, 2004 Report Posted July 30, 2004 But if they don't have significant market share, no one will even recompile software for it. Touchscreen isn't the issue here, the screen size is so small pocket PC developers will throw a fit when they try to port, and smartphone apps rely on plenty of buttons for control.
Guest midnight Posted July 30, 2004 Report Posted July 30, 2004 errr, what smartphone apps require lots of buttons to control????? does that mean that pocketpc developers wont bother with the ms smartphone either cos of the small screen???? And that MS Smartphone apps are no good on PocketPC cos of 'lots of buttons required'? It's quicker to port a PocketPC app/game to the Neonode than it is to the MS Smartphone. And, its quicker to port an MS Smartphone app/game to the Neonode than it is to port it to PocketPC (unless you dont bother with any rescaling) the Neonode is a very targetted device, in fact, i'd argue, even with its low quantities, game developers would rather do games for the Neonode than MS Smartphone, cos lets face it, games for MS Smartphone currently do not sell very well at all. And, that touchscreen allows for some nice control methods, hell, even the Nintendo DS has a touchscreen and thats a dedicated game device. Neonode is an entertainment device, games, music, video whereas MS Smartphone is (currently) targetted at business use. I'm not saying it will be a huge roaring success, but what i am saying is its too early to tell and lets give them a chance, I for one wish them the best of luck, it's great to see some ingenuity for once instead of the same old standard mobile phones.
Guest midnight Posted July 30, 2004 Report Posted July 30, 2004 kl1wdr, i'll try and find them again, they where on a site somewhere, need to find the name of the person who took them so i can credit aswell :P
Guest haso0on Posted July 30, 2004 Report Posted July 30, 2004 Are there some on the web for us to see? I am really curious... :D there are check www.redneo.com/forum one of the members has got his N1 a month ago... and he posted so many pictures of it...
Guest midnight Posted July 30, 2004 Report Posted July 30, 2004 and heres some pics from that site (courtesy of Loowa)....
Guest gravity Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 Yea pretty descent lens for a VGA CCD, but still has the same old problem with older VGA CCDs, and that is the dark areas around the image, if you look at the images you can see that the center is brighter than the edges, gives it a keyhole look.
Guest Pigo Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 I agree with midnight!!! to be honest I see this phone as a mix of pocket PC & smartphone. I think this thing (or maybe the N2) will be a HUGE hit. Just think of this. what other phone has a pre-order list of 14.000? (read it somewhere) the vibrating thing is something they missed the boat with. it's a very important funtion. and another thing. it's light, small and VERY affordable. everybody's gonna want this thing. a lot of people I know love the smartphones but they're just to big & to heavy for them. My only tip to Neonode is. BOOST THE PRODUCTION SOMEHOW!!!!!! one thing I'm curious about though. the screen should be about as big as my mpx200. and how are they gonna fit thumbs on that screen. one of my thumbs covers half the screen :? Pigo
Guest midnight Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 thats tha old pre-order list, the new one is over 20,000 :P and, to be honest, i dont have vibrate turned on with my e100, i tend to wear combats which are pretty baggy so i dont feel the vibration anyways. as for size of your thumb, you use the tip of your thumb, not the whole thing  dont forget it doesnt work under pressure it works by detecting motion, and if you want even more accuracy, use two hands and use your finger instead :D
