Guest elhornet Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 Had a quick 5 day work trip to Tokyo and noticed that every_single_person out there owns a flip phone. I hadn't seen any of them before either. Not your traditional Motorolla-esque flips, they all had crazy branded ones most of them with super hi megapixel cameras. No smartphones to report, but a few handsets the size of a box of matches that had apparently just been released. What an insane place though, everyone into gadgets should definently take a look around Akihabara sometime :P
Guest Colonel Trouble Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 lucky sod you are :P :D
Guest elhornet Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 Haha I know, it was blast too. Everything yells at you there. They have 40 foot high animated billboards that are really loud and yell all the time. Crazy place. I walked around the gadget places going oh wow omg whats that. I'm big into old Game and Watch style games and I found a whole shop full of them and other 80's desktop games. Could have blown thousands in a couple of days :P
Guest Pigo Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 hmm sounds like I should take a trip there as well. wish they had smartphones the size of matchboxes
Guest Posted August 6, 2004 Report Posted August 6, 2004 I also went to Tokyo earlier this year, and naturaly went to Akihabara, which is like London's Tottenham Court Road on steriods. I was amazed by how many shops and stalls there were it a relatively small area and how cheap some of it was - I got a mini optical wireless mouse for less than a fiver! True gadget freak heaven! (although very bad for the bank balance) What did amaze me was how text messaging hasn't taken off over there at all - it's a completely alien concept. Unlike most of Europe (incl UK) where it's gone bonkers and everyone texts like mad.
Guest elhornet Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 True. I bought a Sanyo Xacti VPC-C1 camera for £200. They retail in the UK for £400 :D True about the text messaging. They just seem to call each other instead. Strange creatures :P
Guest nickcornaglia Posted August 8, 2004 Report Posted August 8, 2004 True. I bought a Sanyo Xacti VPC-C1 camera for £200. They retail in the UK for £400 :D True about the text messaging. They just seem to call each other instead. Strange creatures :P Same here in the US. I beg my friends to use text messaging...but no one can grasp it other than one or two friends.
Guest Toe Posted August 8, 2004 Report Posted August 8, 2004 quite the opposite for Australians. I'd prefer my friends to call. I hate replying to the standard "Where are you?" sms i get regularly
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted August 8, 2004 Report Posted August 8, 2004 Me and my girlfriend tend to SMS at work or when one is out and the other isn't. Bit like IM it means you can keep chatting to people actually there while talking to the missus at the same time :P
Guest gravity Posted August 9, 2004 Report Posted August 9, 2004 They use Email instead of sms in Japan. Hopefully more people will buy smartphones so we can all use MSN instead. And with the launch of 3G, GPRS prices are going to drop like the american economy after Bush took office.
Guest muck Posted August 12, 2004 Report Posted August 12, 2004 mmmmmmmmmm.. breakfast lunch and dinner from the hotel vending machines.. i need one of those in my house... ohh... and the beer too... i could do with another visit to japan.. thats for sure..... japan are on some form of 3g arent they?
Guest Posted August 19, 2004 Report Posted August 19, 2004 There are various mobile networks in Japan (I forget how many), one of which is I-Mode by NTT DoCoMo which is a 3G network. A lot of people still have 2G phones though.
