Hi,

I have a SPV with 128mb SD card. I have been using TMPGEnc Encoder to encode video files for my spv as MPG, until i tries to convert 1 movie that would'nt quite go under 128mb. I got told to go for divx so i got pocketdivx encoder but was suprised when it was still about 100 odd mb's. What about WMV is that the smallest size.

I want to find the best way to have small file sizes but still good quality. :P

Hmmmm. What movie format would work best for a MICROSOFT Smartphone. Just mess'n with ya. Probably a .wmv.

Or .mpg if you have the mpg player.

It's interesting. you can chage a wmv extention to mpg and it works.

I wonder why???

I used Windows Movie maker and converted a 3 gig Unnamed movie with an actor named William and a bunch of bots to 110 mb. I could get it smaller I'm sure, but it wouldn't be watchable.

I have found a Divx encoded avi to produce the best quality/size ratio. If I were encoding a mpg, I would tend to keep the bitrate in the 400's at the lowest. Wtih avi's I will go down as low as 128kbps, and it still looks and sounds good enough to watch. I use either Virtualdub or Dr. Divx for encoding, and BetaPlayer for viewing.

The problem with avi is the size. I agree avi produces a pretty good image, but mpg/wmv gives you more for the size.

I agree.

and avi tends to drop some frames. haven't had that with WMV yet.

just wish betaplayer would make a version that plays WMV.

doesnt PocketTv do all the hard work for you? I havent got around to App unlocking my new toy (e200) yet and loading on the Classic edition but i did think that it would let you pick a file from the SD card ( mpg or whatever) and hit the play button.... am i deluding myself to the simplicity of the app? I really cant be @rsed with mucking around with bitrate, sample rates an' all that malarkey

Try this, put the wmv on your card and change the extention name to mpg, it should work. Size won't change, but you can play it with pocket tv. I read this somewhere on the web and it worked. I'll try to find the link.

And give Windows Movie Maker a try. It really is a great converter for smartphone.

I think .WMV files have the best compression ratio out of the other options (.MPG and .AVI). And with the new WM2003 rom, the video is pretty good on the Windows Media Player that comes with it.

I tried using movie maker (2) and infact it was a good 40mb and ok quality, BUT it didnt play the movie only sound in media player on spv, and changing it to a mpg just made pocket tv freeze. Is this something to do with in being windows video codec 9.

huh??? divx is by far the best (size and quality) encoded with vdub and played in betaplayer

wmv is nice, but theres no full screen landscape players out yet

Guest jcjdoss

Not sure how much of a difference it makes, but I was using Movie maker 1. I agree the lack of landscape view sucks.

Thanks for backing me up midnight, I felt like I was taking crazy pills for a while there. I have tried all formats, and prefer divx to everything. WMV is moving in the right direction, but still isn't great.

I tried all of those and for me Divx played in Beta Player is the best. wmv for Smartphone 2002 sucks.

I agree Lukeap!!!!! Divx played in (Beta Player) is the best. and WMV it

ok. Just say WMV use 8mb and Beta Player use 10mb.

The only good thing about (WMV) it easy to use. For movie and

video,Divx played in (Beta Player) is the best

Hi,

I have Betaplayer and vdub instaled now. Could somebody provide a guide on how to use virirtual dub. I downloaded spv setting for it but the file sizes are massive ie (50mb for 2 mins)

Thanks in advance

I can safely say DivX is best!

Spent a LOT of time sorting it all out!!!

Check the sig.

doesn't anybody care about the dropped frames. short movies are great in divx but when I want to watch a complete movie it drops too many!

and WMV is small and ass far as I know doesn't drop frames. and I agree te lack of landscape mode sucks big time.

a friend of mine has 2003. and that does have landscape mode on it's media player.

that's why I said I wish betaplayer could play WMV

i use pocketdivx encoder and pull the sliders all the way down on both the sound quality and video quality

and use beta player to play it

i used divx files @680 meg and convert them down to between 76 and 90 meg videos for my E100

i also click the XVID box aswell

the phone plays them back crystal clear without any pauses in the film

have watched a few full films on my phone

I hav used pocketdivx but they are quite big.

Somebody must beable to tell me how to use virtual dub

Thanks

Hi all,

I've also had success with Dr. DivX, and BetaPlayer - I tried encoding mpeg for PocketTV as per their instructions, and not only did it take five times longer to process, but the result was crap, all sorts of distortions and artifacts, green boxes, etc.

Dr. DivX worked just great, and the quality was quite excellent. I compressed an hour of a DVD into 100 MB at high quality defaults in Dr. DivX, so a full movie will fit very well into a 256MB SD card.

Interesting... the only complaints that people have is that MPEG files are 1.5 to 2x larger than DivX files, but quality is about the same if the bitrate is correctly choosen. You must have selected an incorrect bitrate or some other problem occured. TMPGEnc is considered to be one of the best MPEG-1 software encoder (and it is free!), and we use it all the times with no problems. Others can try it (see the MPEG guide). Make sure to select the "fast" templates if you want fast encoding.

Hey All

I use TMPGEnc to encode the files using the templates from CoolSmartPhone (i think thats where is got them).

I got a 5min Mpg down to 4.85Mb, the quality is good, and the sound is also good. I dont watch many Large Files (2 hours) on my phone so cant really comment. but for small movies this works ok for me.

The only long movie i have done is 1hr 25 mins and is around 75Mb. i have not put it on my phone yet so cant comment. but i will let your know when i have done it.

If you want the templates then have a look around, or message me. they are available on the net, so im pretty sure i aint breaking any rules by doing this... if i am then let me know

Will the speed on the SD card takes any effect on the quality and the smoothness of the movie?
