SD Card Weird Problem :(

Hey people, hope you're all cool.

I got a little something i'd like you guys to have a pick at, if you would be so kind

Ok, i have an e200, and recently was given a spare 256 Kingston 256mb SD Card, by a mate who'd lost his phone and had this as his other card, laying around at home on the shelf.

Now when he gave the card to me, there was a lot of data on there, mainly MP3s, etc, which i didn't want, so thought i'd format the card.

as i'd just upgraded the ROM on the phone i didn't yet have smart explorer or any other software to format the card with, so i wacked the card in the card reader built into my laptop, and formatted the card using windows (right clicking my computer, choosing format) and formatted to the fat 32 file system.

BiG mistake as you're probably all aware.

I put the card back into my phone and a few days later tried to copy some files to the card from the phone memory, using the now installed smart explorer, only to get an error "unable to copy [filename]".

i checked the switch on the side of the card, it was in the correct position for write access. weird.

ok, so i tried copying some files to the card by connecting via activesync and accessing the card through explorer, dragging my files over to the card.

In this case i got the error "Cannot copy [filename]: The file may be in read-only memory, on a write protected disk, or currently in use by another application".

ok now i was confused... neither of those were applicable, why couldn't i write to the card.

Basically, to cut a long story short, i still can't write to the card, i've tried formatting to fat16, fat32 and still had no joy.

i've to reformat the card using smart explorer, but it gives me an error that it cannot format the card, and i cannot work out why...

(the card was fine to read/write to before i formatted to fat32 using the laptop).

i hunted around the net for some help, and the only thing i came up with about the file system of an SD card is that i may be able to sort this out by formatting to a "Raw" file system? - but i don't know what software to use to do this.

Please note that i can write data to the card via the card reader on the laptop, and the phone has no problem accessing this, for example, i've got some new MP3s on there and these play fine, but the card can not be written to by the phone, and i'm sure its not a problem with the card itself.

Has anyone made this mistake?

Any help as to how i can get my card working again would be much appreciated.. going from 8mb to 256mb, then messing up the card really popped my bubble

Thanks in advance.

Just in case you had the app's name wrong have you tried using

Task Manager from www.binarys.com ?

I have used this to format corrupt cards before.

You also an have a situation where your SPV works with the bundled 8MB SDcard. You buy a 256MB Card, but it doesn't work in your SPV. But put it in another SPV, and it works fine.

I think that HTC probably use whatever parts they can get cheaply, which sometimes results in impaired performance - like when Sony dropped the price of the first Playstation, but in doing so produced second rate machines.

I'd try it in the SPV it was originally in, and see if that works. That is, if it's never worked in your phone.

Hope this helps! :P

I have the same problem with a viking 512mb SDcard which i haven't got to work since i bought it. It's been showing the same symptoms as yours by the looks of it.

My E200 phone automatically tries to format the card at regular intervals but it just doesn't work.

Maybe the cards just aren't compatible with the phones?

Any luck with that list squall?
