Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted August 9, 2004 Report Posted August 9, 2004 I can't quite work this one out. I am receiving uncopious quantities of spam a day, in fact i have exactly 19 spam messages each time i poll my SMTP server (every 2 mins). What is odd is that it never seems to be more than 19 messages, regardless of how long i leave between polling, it's always the same 19 messages. It feels like as if my own machine is generating these messages and passing them back on itself. It's weird. Anyone seen this before or heard anything about it?
Guest beersoft Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 hmmmm!!! it sounds like your isp/maildrop is rewriting the to headers to say mailbox@monosdomain instead of keeping them as randomspamprobe@monosdomain, which is why they look like its the same message over and over again I had the same type of thing, thousands of messages to randomemail@beerysdomain all from random email addresses but all from the same ip address. there are 2 ways to stop it: 1) make a mail rule to drop unknown email in outhouse 2) block the spammer from your smtp server with a ipchans rule i like option 2 because its a BOFH style soloution :P it stopped after a few days for me later Owen
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 1: I already do, but it makes for pricey GPRS bills if i want to sync wirelessly :P 2: I don't run my own mail server (yet)... Further investigation shows thy all seem to be originating from Paypal smtp servers, i've contacted them so we'll see what they say. I'm hoping they don't have a black hole on their network...
