Guest dell69er Posted August 10, 2004 Report Posted August 10, 2004 Hi, I am considering buying either TomTom or something similar but want to know what else (hardware) I'd need. I was under the impression that the M1000 came with GPS - have I got this wrong? If so, what do I need to get? Thanks
Guest )(nspired ))ead Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 Firstly, No the phone comes with GPRS not GPS... You need to get a couple of things, mainly the GPS Unit Software and a car kit... Tom Tom 3 is about the best software you will find at the moment... I use the Wireless Bluetooth unit BT308, It is mounted out of site and uses the anntenna supplied mounted on top of dashboard. A car kit is needed for SAFE driving which allows for normal phone usage via car speakers or external speaker and a microphone as the sound is crap trying to use M1000 on speakerphone in car when moving. Only get the PROPER XDA2/Imate/M1000 ones. (XDA2 one is now available from O2) and according to the XDA2 forums others screw up the phone somehow. They costs about £140 and should be fitted proffessionally if possible another £100 or there abouts... You can use just a normal mount but the GPS will flatten the Battery really quickly - so it needs power.. Lastly to the software - Listen UP !!!! Tom Tom 3 is brilliant, a few bugs relating to M6 Toll and ability to use avoid or go via (but thats same with most other software) will be updated soon. Download the latest version from Tom Tom website... Download the following freebies.... Checkpoint - which is a point of view database program for Tom Tom 3 allowing you to use points of interest ie: Argos shops, B & Q, Morrisons, McDonalds etc to appear in the navigator. You can download the regularly updated SPEED CAMERA POI, it is very very accurate. has all types of speed camera - normal, sectional, red light, bus lane and all favourite mobile camera points. You can edit the POI's add your own, so if your local Tesco is to new, add it manually, when you synch with the checkpoint server, it will update the server and after confirmation will be availlable to all.. Postcode - a program that works in conjunction with Tom Tom 3, allowing look up and navigate to specific postcode. Lastly on the Tom Tom web site you can download and use free for three months the Traffic Updater program which will let you automaticly miss out traffic delays, roadworks etc etc by recalculating a new route when you get near enough. A small charge after that. Lastle anyone wanting to UNLOCK the SPV-M1000 for FREE check out the XDA-Developers Forum - the program xdaunlock is available to download free, just copy it to phone using active sync and run,, thats it no sodding around with boot loaders etc,,, Hope this helps you all...
