Guest Simon Desser Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 A certain someone, who runs a certain website said:- Several British owned websites devoted to Microsoft Smartphone have obtained as a free gift from Orange operator an Orange SPV C500 cell phone, so now they (again) are not objective but are just becoming an Orange sponsored Orange marketing machines that rather uncritically promote Orange product(s) rather than providing objective information Grapes and sour spring to mind  Can you guess who said it :?: :P :D  (BTW, I'm jealous too, but I'd never openly admit it  )
Guest chucky.egg Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 Could it be... The font of all Smartphone wisdom, The single-handed saviour of Smartphone, The Lord of balanced, analytical debate? Or if not him then that t*sser msmobiles maybe?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 I challenged JPZR about this, but he said he isn't referring to MoDaCo, although he wouldn't say so because it is against his 'principles' to mention specific sites. P
Guest zeta101 Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 how many other British Smartphones sites are there that have received a c500 and written a review?
Guest markgamber Posted August 14, 2004 Report Posted August 14, 2004 I don't know what they're crying about, the review here killed any idea I had of getting one. I put with enough nasty bugs in the Mitac, why beg for more problems with another Rev 1 phone?
Guest zeta101 Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 hmmm, you have to give it to msmobiles now tho...from reading his site for the past coupla months you could see he was a big mpx220 fan, a lot of the news items were biased towards that. But now hes posted some news about how the c500 has a better type of memory...which gives it much better speed comapred to the 220, looks like hes changed his mind now. i wonder if orange sent him a free c500...hehe
Guest beersoft Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 i think hes talking about msmobilenews.com, because we stole his name, and are now stealing all the free stuff the developers would have sent to him. hehehe, jacek makes me laugh, he does like moan about every man and his dog getting a free C500 for review, which is funny because they dont ship them overseas so he doesnt stand much chance of getting a freebe from the big O. and orange, where is my free 'review' phone? later Owen "grumble grumble, afternoons worth of code to make msmn work grumble grumbe"
Guest lutzh Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 i can promise and swear that i have got no c500 for free nor even for a payment from orange. but i love the c500 and i love to share the good experience with it. cheers, lutz
Guest ivor biggun Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 I like the (not MoDaCo) bit at the beggining, has that always been there :P I think he's managed to upset Gears as well, look HERE
Guest nickcornaglia Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I just realized lutzh is MobileJoe. I could have sworn you worked with MSMobiles for some reason. My apologies for any thoughts I may have had as a result! :P
Guest Simon Desser Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I like the (not MoDaCo) bit at the beggining, has that always been there :P No, the "not MoDaCo" bit is an amendment :D
Guest lutzh Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 :-) no problem. most people know that i do post news from time to time on msmobiles if i got time or i am in the mood to do so. but most of the time i hang araound here or at mobilejoe. anyway i don't take things very personal since this is only a hobby and not my life. cheers, lutz
Guest drblow Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 :P Just reading Gears article as in the link above. No harm to Gears (or anybody else), but I do find it a little disconcerting to see comments like Lets not forget who brought us the first ever Windows Smartphone either - and who still support it. Lets be fair here - Orange support for smartphone is embarrassingly poor!! It's always the same when a new phone comes out. The first reviews categorically fail to mention all the problems we have had with previous models from the same Operator/manufacturer. Not that I'm in support of missmobliles, but I don't personally think there is a TRUE level of objectivity in any product reviews.
Guest lutzh Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 well, how can i do that, dr.blow? everyone of us has different way of using the device. i've very much tried to be objective especially when you face the fact that i always spend a lot of money to be with the first who have a new gadget. to me there's one important point that always has been unfulfilled - stand by. this seems to be fixed. regarding the gapi-issues: i did not notice it without the finger pointed on it by paul since i don't use the phone for gaming that much (i am 35). but anyway - where do you get a objective report? see i am working for a big publishing house here in germany that owns a big computing magazine. what do you think how objective editors write when they get powered by nokia with nice skiing weekends, gadgets for free and stuff? they have reviewed the mpx200 and i was not going there to tell them how cool this phone is - results? poor experience... if you go to some other websites where they deal with p900 or so you'll quickly see that the p900 is the phone you should have. same here: how enthusiastic do you have to be to buy a windows powered smartphone? up to now that was definitly nothing for mister or misses miller. it was pure freakshow to handle this phones. just check your own pockets and ask yourself how long the phone in it was there before. i came from spv classic over e100, mitac mio 8380/8390, mpx200, e200 to the c500 now - in two years!!!! always with the high hope that now i will have the phone that works on basic level + additional features. now it looks very much like the c500 can deliver that expectations. some people remind me on words i've spoken - nearly sweared: i'll never buy a htc phone again. you see what i did. now i have to change my mind and say it this way: windows mobile smartphone needed only two years to reach a level that other manufacturers work on since 15 years. thats the message in my head. but it always depends in your very own level of expectations... cheers, lutz
Guest drblow Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Don't get me wrong Lutzh - just general comments! :D I do agree with you that its difficult for reviewers to be objective when they are getting skiing holidays! :P Your review seemed to be as objective as possible, as you are not personally affiliated with any one network/manufacturer. IT would always be better for me to see reviews from regular users, who have experience, about the day-to-day use of a new phone. Not to suggest either that Pauls review was in any way biased - he has quite clearly stated that the phone has at least 1 major bug, and did not award it the prestigious Modaco Approved status. My comments were really aimed at Gears mention of Orange support for smartphones.
Guest lutzh Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 IT would always be better for me to see reviews from regular users are you sure about that? :-) i had a very nice experience when i took part at a motorola training for mobile phone shop workers. they've got a mpx200 in their hands and then they should do different jobs like switching to silent profile, disabling key pad tones or browse a specific url with the browser... i found my self thinking that either motorola or microsoft should take part in that kind of events - beside the stupid comments like "how do i get a blue screen" or "where's strg/alt/del on that phone". cheers, lutz
Guest drblow Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Well obviously there are extremes on both sides. Noone wants to see a review from someone who can't work the phone (which is why I mentioned "experienced" users). Equally, it's pretty useless to see reviews from sources that are clearly sponsored by the provider. I think Paul's C500 review & your own came across as objective, and its great to see Paul rebuking Mr. O's comments about games on O's website. Like I said before, my original comments were fulelled by Gears articel mentioning Orange support for smartphones.
Guest SeaneyC Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 I think Gears has a point, the SPV and E100 had ROM updates, and to be fair, the phone wasn't perfect after the ROM update, but it was much better, Orange clearly saw problems and went to fix them. To me, that is 100 times more support than any other phone i've owned. I got through 8 7110s which had a mixture of software AND hardware problems, a 9110 that constantly switched off the outer screen, and never got more than a swap for a different phone. Orange have consistently supported and raised the bar with the Smartphone platform, and i hope the C500 i have pre-ordered is the phone i have always wanted and more. Hopefully the games fix will be brought out very swiftly, and although you could say that it should have been sorted before it was released, i personally would rather have 90% of the device now, with 10% to come later, rather than waiting a few more months for it to be 100% on all counts. In my eyes this still counts as good support of the phones and smartphone platform, and although far from perfect, it is only 2 years old. Plus i hate nokia, so you could say i am biased.
