I tried to play an exported iTunes AAC file on the phone and it wouldn't work. However, if you cnange the filename (either on the phone or on the desktop) from .m4a to .mp4 then PV player will play it absolutely no problem! Very pleased. :)

It now means that, provided I get a large enough card and a firewire/USB 2.0 reader, I can now use the C500 as a mini-iPod from iTunes, without having to convert the tracks. It also means that the songs take up much less space than a similarly encoded mp3. Having just played landscape full screen trailers using PocketTV, I can truly say this is a proper multimedia device. very impressed. :)

Actually the more I think about it, it was built in by Orange. very good. Not as functional as WMP, but sounds great.

I think you should be able to stream the ananova news at http://pda.ananova.com , Anyone tried it ?

You know, add a file association like you do in Windows when it doesn't recognize a file type and it asks what you want to open it with? Just a thought... -Mc

I did try just opening it in PV player (which would be what making a file association would do), but it simply couldn't play or recognise the type of file. However, the minute you change the suffix to .mp4, it works! So, what you would need is something, either on your desktop or smartphone, that changes the suffix of all your exported files to .mp4 pretty cool.

Guest machiavell1 Posted August 22, 2004 Report Posted August 22, 2004 Is it possible for you to take me through the process, from itunes to C500, cheers :) I have only played with the feature so far, so I don't profess to have the best or most economical method (I just wanted to see if it worked before I invested in any cards or anything). Basically, if you have encoded your tracks in AAC on iTunes, the default suffix is .m4a. You need to export them to a playlist or folder ready to copy to your folder on the phone (either by cable or BT). As I was just testing it out, I just dragged it out of iTunes to the desktop. You can then either copy it to the phone and edit the name of the song on it to change the suffix to .mp4 or do it on your desktop before. I am sure you can change the suffix of whole playlists on the Mac, but I haven't had the chance yet. Once you have done that, PV Player will recognize and play them.

You jut need to edit the name of the track so... From "song.m4a" to "song.mp4" - simple as that. Hope that helps.

The one problem I'm having is that at the end of each track, the PV continues to say Playing and doesn't advance to the next track. Is anyone else seeing this? Time to bug PV I guess..

The file is still a whopping 8mb (one song), would that be a normal size for an 8 min song in aac format? maybe for 8 mins. still- an 8 min AAC song at 128kbs will be alot smaller than a similar quality mp3 at 192kbs! I figured, by analogy with my iPod, that on a 512mb card, I could get approx. 150 songs at 128kbs AAC- which ain't bad!

It seems obvious to people who've long used windows, but many newer users now dont even know about file extensions since the last couple of versions hides them as standard.
