Does the C500 need application unlocking?

Hi All,

I have just got my C500 and I before I started customising and playing about with it, I wondered if anyone knew if the C500 needs app unlocking as per previous SPV's?

If so, how do you do it? The usual OTA site?

The phone will need Application unlocking and there is a mixed

response about the OTA method working correctly at this time.

Chances are it will take a while to be efficient method to decert the phone as it has only just been released.

Can I take from your answer that I would be best waiting until more info is available before I try to app unlock my C500 (bearing in mind I am not that technical!!!)?

You can always give OTA a go and select E200 as phone to be

unlocked. This will be the only official way to unlock so you may

as well try now and see if it works.

My C500, which was supplied from Orange shop, will allow any software to be installed. All it does is gives you a warning like windows XP does saying that this software is not certified do you want to continue. Press yes and the applications will install.

I did NO application un-locking

Also if you have problems and everything goes tits, follow my instructions for returning the handset to its factory settings under HArd Reset.

With the E200 you could install most unsigned software as you say, but some homescreens etc still required a decert

Judging by what was said in tonights Meet The Parents chat with Orange, the C500 doesnt need App Unlocking

I needed to unlock to add a root cert so that OTA ActiveSync works with my company E2K3 system.

I used the Orange site, but had a few problems - worked in the end.

OTA ActiveSync Works like a dream with E2K3...not looking forward to my GPRS bill though :roll:

So the SVP C500 is not using the new "prompt mode" ?

"promt mode" was introduced by MSFT in Smartphone 2003.

Smartphones set to "promt mode" ask user confirmation before installing apps that are not signed.

Yes, that's what I thought.

They use the "prompt mode", so there is no need to application-unlock.

Well, if they are executable but not from the ROM, then you probably have installed them from a setup file or a CAB. Setup files install CAB's on the PC, so you have the CAB, and you can crack the CAB opened to get the .exe files...

So you only need privileges (or app-unlock) to extract files from the ROM, which is not something you generally need to do.

I used the app OTA unlock last night.

The first two times, I got a message stating that my IMIE was incorrect - however it wasnt.

After reading something by vector here, I fired up PIE and left GPRS on.

The third time after inputting my details and proceeding, the page on my PC just hung.

I walked away, but when I returned I had a message on the phone stating that it was now application unlocked. Funny really, given that the browser on my PC was still stuck on the name, IMIE etc details page at the OTA site.

Very hit and miss, I think.

I've just unlocked my C500 with no problems...took about 30 seconds!

Just unlocked C500 using OTA to run trial version of TinyGPS. Unlocked OK just now need to work out how to use it.

Hmmmmm.....so does the C500 need to be unlocked or not? I believe not, as I have managed to install several apps which said unlocking was a pre-requisite.

However, I have also had a permissions issue with 2 different homescreen themes?

Are these related? Noob after advice... :oops:

The C500 needs app unlocking if you need to do any reg tweaking of protected entries, that includes any Extra screen skinning (error screens, startup/shutdown screens, start menu, in call and dialing headers/backgrounds etc.), Cleartype fonts (cleartype looks lovely on the C500 why dont MS or O make a nice signed app that allows you to turn it on or off?), and a few other bits and peices.

Homescreen skinners have got used to skinning these screens for a while now, and MS have deliberately locked down these entries because they dont like us removing their startup/shutdown MS splash screens (sorry MS, you can blame me for that one :))

I have the c500 have unlocked using OTA all seems ok - get the message to confirm but when I try and install 'companionlink' cab I get an error message saying the cab file is not intended for this device ! Any ideas?

Im having poblems with my c500 unlocking it's a replacment handset from orange and managed to unlock the first one ok and this one not unlocking at all tryed via the website and the software to bung on ya phone and not working can anyone help

Make sure you've connected to GPRS once before doing the unlock process, and use this link rather than one of the others doing the rounds :wink:

If you follow the instructions carefully this method should always work. It may not work first time though, so give it another go :lol:

Is there a Smartphone version of Companionlink ?

Remember Pocket PC software is not compatible with Smartphones.
