Guest lenoz Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Hi all! First of all, I've been scouting round the web and these forums for a couple of hours now without much luck, so please don't dismiss my post - it's a last resort now! Here are my details: - I'm in the UK - previous phone was Nokia, am on O2 UK pay as you go SIM card, the one with 300 free texts - purchased a supposedly 'unlocked' MPx200 from the USA via eBay - put in battery (no SIM) and charged phone through USB (obviously mains charger is USA 2-pin format) - when battery charged, flashed the update for WM2003 (before phone had even been turned on still) - flash all went fine, did hard reset, which went fine - turned on phone, shows Hello Moto then Windows Mobile, and asked me to Insert SIM - turned off, insert SIM, turned on - after a while got into main menu screen, but cannot get any service. So that's basically my problem, I'm sure to one of you it'll be an easy solution. The phone says AT&T Wireless logo on bottom inside flip. - how do i check if it is really unlocked? - how do i unlock it? - will i need to unlock the application thing (decert) - does it make a difference if I am on O2, all the decert links I have seen are to Orange Dev site? - what do I need to know about different ROM versions etc. etc. etc.? x I've been running round the room with excitement, upgraded from Nokia 3510 so this is the first decent phone I've owned, and I can't get it working! As you can imagine, highly frustrating, and one of you out there can really, really make my day! If you need any more details from me, just ask. Tried downloading the SIM-unlocker from Monolithix, but that won't work, asks to make sure phone is in bootloader mode. I don't even know what that is or how to get to it (literally owned this phone for only 6 hours!) and not even sure if that program would do the right thing, so I'm asking all you lovely people for help. Yours, in hope and in advance appreciation! Matt
Guest squall Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 if the phone doesnt ask for a sim unlock code when its powered on, its not sim locked. try going into settings/telephony and makesure its all set to automatic, or o2. also check the radio stacks not turned off my dabbingthe power button I think you will find the 2003 rom update is application unlocked, so the orange devlopers site isnt needed. Guest lenoz Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Hi Ian! Thanks for your quick reply. I'll be as informative as I can. I'm not sure whether by settings/telephony you meant Settings OR Telephony or Settings and then Telephony. Cos I definitely don't have a Telephony settings menu on page 1 or page 2 of settings. As it was, I went through everything I could find. Settings > Phone > Networks - Network Selection: Automatic Settings > Data Connections > everything set to: Automatic Settings > Regional Settings > set to English (UK) Settings > Security > shows 'enable SIM lock' so you're right i guess in it being disabled Settings > Phone Settings > Preferred Band: Automatic they're the only relevant things I could find in the settings menu I tried 'dabbing' the power button as you put it, but it just made the clicking navigational noise (not turned it off yet!) and nothing appears on screen, so not sure what you mean by radio stacks. I held it down for a bit longer (slightly) and got the double-click noise, and it came up with profiles. But no radio stack info there either. So all a bit lost again. Hope you still have more ideas! Matt
Guest squall Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 when you press the power button the will either be an option called areoplane: - set this to off radio: - set to on the name changes depending on the rom update. (Settings > Security > shows 'enable SIM Lock' so you're right i guess in it being disabled )thats not the simlock your thinking of, this is a code you can choose to add to sim to stop other people using the sim Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest lenoz Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Hi Ian I've got the Flight mode. And it was off... the icon top right shows no reception (the split circle) as opposed to reception off (the cross). I tried turning it on and when I turned flight mode back off again, the icon for the reception shows 2 bars, while it says 'searching...' and then it goes back to the split circle for no service and says, 'No Service'. I thought it might be a promising sign that the symbol had 2 bars instead of all 4 (all 4 would more likely be a generic 'searching' symbol?) But really I have no idea. There 's no implications of importing from the US that I haven't considered? Thanks, Matt
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 I'm not a network expert (that's martins area) but there could be a possibility that you are trying to use the 900band for this you need a triband MPX the AT&T phones are only dualband. As I said I'm not an expert on network settings as I do not play with them enough.
Guest lenoz Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 I had worried about this. I might have just really screwed myself then? :'( Settings > Phone Settings > Preferred Band i have set this to 1900 as opposed to 900/1800 or even Automatic but this hasn't seemed to have helped. I got up today thinking I would have one of the happiest days with my new phone and now it's quickly turning into more of a nightmare than I had imagined. Anyone have any ideas how I could make £100 back on this phone if it is only dualband? There's no way of making it triband is there? Thanks again Matt
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Unfortunately not, but some of the early AT&T phones were actually triband and flashing with the phone with the leaked moto 2002 ROM enabled the 900 band. As for settings I would keep it on Automatic.
Guest lenoz Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 Ok, I do get the option of 900/1800 or 1900 (and of course, Automatic) so doesn't the fact that I have these two choices make it triband? Can you set me straight on what is the UK and the US band? Where's the icon for having a cry? :-( lol

Unfortunately not. Best thing to do is wait for martin to see the post so he can maybe shed some more light on the problem.
Guest martin Posted August 20, 2004 Report Posted August 20, 2004 WOW, you should try reading a topic like this after a few beers :) Yep I believe awarner is right :P O2 and Vodafone are mainly GSM900 and it sounds like you have bought yourself a dualband GSM 1800/1900 version of the MPX200. Best thing to do is borrow a T-mobile or Orange SIM from a friend to test the phone. Both these networks are completely GSM1800. I assume you have tested your SIM in another phone to ensure the O2 network is OK. Just out of curiosity - Under Settings > Phone > Networks you should have an option to Select a network. When the phone does a search does it find any networks ?
Guest lenoz Posted August 21, 2004 Report Posted August 21, 2004 Mm yes... a few beers and then some :) seems like you were right. tried mate's orange sim. works fine straight away. i'm screwed. dunno what to do. maybe try selling it on ebay to an orange or t-mobile user? *sigh* so harsh...
