Guest gball Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 Not (yet) a smartphone user, but the C500 has convinced me! The only decision is whether to wait for a newer firmware version or just get one now and hopefully get it upgraded later. I'm used to getting Nokia's flashed, but have no idea about this OS/hardware combo. Is it an extra patch file (which reduces memory) or a CPW or post back to Orange job? Thanks, Gordon
Guest inspectorgadjet Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 You will not need to send your phone back for ROM updates. Orange makes them available from their web site, and you simply download the files, and run the program. Follow the instructions, and you will successfully update your own phone. With Windows Mobile phones and other devices, a certain amount of memory is assigned for the ROM. Whenever you update the ROM, it overwrites what is already in there. You will also have a set amount of storage space on the device. On the ca500, it is 32mb. When you flash the ROM on your phone, it does clear out the storage space so you should backup anything on the phone you need. As far as I know, this is the way it's done. If I'm mistaken one of the experts will soon let us know. :)
Guest Disco Stu Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 ROM upgrades never seem to take up any extra memory
Guest t3dluke Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 The ROM file is always the same size regardless as its a firmware update same for PDAs too, altough the amount of file size used can increase but usually doesnt. It wont affect the amount of RAM available unless they include more things that run on the background. Usually though ROM updates increase performance.
