Guest Damian_demon Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 This is mainly to Paul seeing as you seem to know Orange pritty well, I have E200 and on my bill I pay for Photo Msg's each month but now that I've sent them the SPV is connecting via GPRS and orange are charging me shed loads for this. I am just wondering if you had any ideas on how I should tackle orange about this. I don't use the net on my phone cos its to slow, so the only thing to be running up the GPRS charges must be Picture Msg's.
Guest zeta101 Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 hmmm that is interesting! ive noticed that my phone connects to GPRS when i send a pic message, but i assumed that the "network" knows not to count that data in your GPRS count, maybe cos it connects to a special MMS server. (although im not paul hehe) id say the best thing to do is actually ring up orange (dial 150 from your phone then press 6 to talk to someone ) and just ask them about it, try not to get pissed off at them, cos it wont be thier fault hehe good luck
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 When the phone connects to send an MMS, it connects via the 'OrangeMMS' APN, and so the connection is totally seperate from the 'OrangeInternet' APN. Basically, your GPRS charges are very very very unlikely to have been caused by sending MMS. P
Guest martin Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 Yep MMS uses the GPRS network but you are only charged a set rate for each message received. What you could do is delete the 'Orange GPRS' and 'Orange WAP' connections in the GPRS connections menu. That way if any applications (like E-mail, Messenger or any other) try to connect via GPRS then you would get an error message notifying you.
Guest Damian_demon Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 I know it makes haveing this phone totally pointless but I don't use the internet functions on this phone, I do use e-mails or messenger, and the billing for data calls has only occured since I've sent MMS's, I'll just have to pop into an orange shop and moan at them and see if it happens again when i next send an MMS, the reason why I think its the MMS's is because when I send one the little G pops up on the signal sign showing that GPRS is active. Ah well thanks for the info any ways
Guest martin Posted August 23, 2004 Report Posted August 23, 2004 The little G pops up because MMS messages are also sent across the GPRS network (using APN orangemms) and these are charged separately with a fixed cost per message. If you are using E-mail and Messenger then you WILL be charged for GPRS data transfer (using APN orangeinternet or orangewap). Obviously you won't be charged for any inclusive MB's you have in your GPRS package. You have to look at the total GPRS usage minus inclusive MB's.
