Got 2 E200's here and 2 C500's. While the E200's signal is strong and un-fluctuating, the C500 is far weaker and tends to hunt a lot more. It can be 0 bars one second and 4 the next.

Anyone else with an E200/100/SPV care to compare?

Can you clarify what you've written, pagemaker, please? It doesn't make sense as is... :-)

I have exactly the same problem. My C500 at home tends to hover around the no bars to 1 bar level compared to 3-4 on my E200.

It also jumps around like a yo yo.

Depending on where I am in my huse the signal bar just seem to jump around. At work it is rock solid 4 bars though.

At work mine is too. May just be a crappy Orange transmitter

I think this is only really relevant if we can compare with previous SPV's. IE: in my house 4 solid bars on the E200 and between 0 and 4 bars fluctuating on my E500

Agreed, in my house both E100 and E200 are rock solid 4 bars to full. The wifes Nokia 6100 and 6230 bnoth have almost full signal, again solid.

C500 up and down like a wh**res knickers. GPRS connections work sometimes, and sometimes they don't. Today is a don't kind of day.

I think the C500 just seems to refresh the signal icon more frequently - it used to really annoy me about my mk1 spv when it had 4 bars, then I'd try to make a call, and then it would suddenly flick to no bars and not be able to make the call.

Yesterday mine didn't ring when I had a call but quite happily sent me a voicemail notification. I returned the call without any problems all from the same location within the house.

I'm wondering if they have made changes to the radio modes on the phone. I know the API details various power modes for the radio, one of which is low power. Perhaps part of HTCs "clever" power management involves flicking the phone into this low power mode. This is all good and well, but not if it prevents you receiving calls.

I've also noticed that if you have a low signal level showing and you then make a call the signal bar goes right up before settling down again.

I've noticed these phenomena too. From 0-4 bars in an instant, higher bars during a call. I've also found that the C500 is happy making a call (with excellent call quality) on 0 bars and just the aerial symbol.

I also noticed this today, was working in a basement with thick concrete walls on three sides, the bars were fluctuating between 0-4. What's important though is that the signal never actually dropped, I received all text msgs and calls (all of which sounded excellent).

The C500 definately has poor signal reception. I can barely travel down the M6 for 5 minutes without being cut off. My E200 never suffered from such a problem.

hmm, seems mileage varies with use then :)

I am the only person in my office that is able to retain signal lock. no one else has a c500. The Nokia 6600s and T68is often can't even receive texts let alone make and receive calls.

Not sure about the lone E200

I can only compare with the SPV, E100, E200 and C500. The latter has by far the weakest reception.
