Guest Saracen Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 I used to own the original SPV. Do the new models still need the number to be in international format (i.e. ++44 7.....) to be able to have name show up when you receive texts? And can you still only send to the number in the "mobile" slot or can you now sent to any number?
Guest Disco Stu Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 AFAIK you need to still enter +44 (etc) format and you can still only send to mobiles.
Guest Saracen Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 What is it with MS. How difficult can it be to get this basic thing working? It's been a bug for nearly 2 years! It's not difficult or unfair to expect. I suppose you still can't sned contacts by SMS, or save numbers from an SMS in your phone, or receive business cards. Is there now a counter, and can you send long messages too? Hmm, I want the S500, but I don't want another year of frustration trying to use it as a phone.
Guest Disco Stu Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 Well, the international number format I can see as being a good thing, for the sake of standardisation. The lack of functionality of the SMS software is a bit surprising since other operators / manufacturers have got it working. You appear to be able to send SMS to non-mobile numbers, but as I don't know anyone to send one to, I can't check this. Good news is there is now a character counter. If you send messages longer than 160 the recipient will recieve 2 (etc) separate texts. If they have an E200 (etc) the message is recombined for reading at their end. Hope this helps :)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 I don't think the international number thing is the case any more, and you can sent to any number in the 'SMS slot' now. P
Guest midnight Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 thought the international number was fixed ages ago? i know i have 1.6 and loads of my phone numbers are just standard uk numbers with no international dialing code infront of them and everything seems to work ok :)
Guest Phil Lee Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 On the C500, if you go into a contact, select a telephone number then select Menu > Send Text Message, the selected number appears in the To field on the new text message. Also on the C500, if I start a new text message and select a contact, I get a list of all of their phone numbers, not just the mobile one. This should allow you to send texts to any phone number.
Guest Saracen Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 OK, so maybe there is hope. It's unfortunate when the primary function of a phone as a phone is neglected in favour of new-fangled toys. Maybe the C500 will be on its way to me after all. Though the dust thread has scared me off for the mo.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 I think the C500 functions excellently as a phone, and that the phone side has definitely not been neglected. To be honest, MS always say they want to make the Smartphone a Phone first and everything else second, altho that has been hard to believe up to now ;-) P
Guest Saracen Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 That's great. Thatnks for the help. Hey, just noticed that I joined before midnight, that's got to make a grandfather by board standards :) I think I'll wait a week or so on the dust issue, then see what I can wring out of Orange.
Guest usrhlp Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 "or save numbers from an SMS in your phone" i have been able to do that since the original spv! just choose "use number" then insert it into a new contact. Easy.
Guest midnight Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 i joined pretty late really compared to some of the others, i wasnt exactly an early adopter :)

Easy. Does this work only for the sender number, or can you do this for any number actually in the BODY of the sms message...? I think this is what the problem area is - as you can do this easily with Nokias etc, when someone 'types' you number in the body of the message... But not so Smartphones...?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 Nope - not the body, which is annoying. I click it so it initiates the call then immediately hang up. You can pull the number from your call history then
Guest shadamehr Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 Fairly neat workaround anyhow mono - cheers. And how come ya STILL waiting for ya Black C500...?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 Cos i trashed my silver one - its being repaired now, so soon it'll change to something along the lines of "got my silver c500!" :)

Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 Just a clumsy accident unfortunately, bumped into a railing and it knocked the top of the phone through my jeans right on a sweet spot, shattered the LCD and cracked the screen: http://www.chrisis.me.uk/c500.jpg 120 quid repair bill :)
