Guest Dectomax Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 HI, Does anybody know if there are any programmers working on an app. that uses GPS to indicate when speed cameras are approaching like the 'Road Angel' but for smart phone. There is a speed camera database available. I'd heard a rumour somebody was working on it. Just wondering 'cos i'd buy it for definite. I'm Holding off getting a bluetooth GPS until this becomes available. Mapopolis only indicate where the cameras are, but don't give an audible warning! Bit of an oversight if you ask me. It should bleep near a POI. Cheers.
Guest ultimasnake Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 I would just say: Just stick to the speed limit, no need for a warning then since you won't be flashed;)
Guest Dectomax Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 Nice to be warned of any accident blackspots in advance, then I can slow down earlier, whilst at the same time avoiding being flashed 8) ....... hang on, that can't be right! They don't put speed cameras at accident blackspots, they put them where they can obtain most revenue!! :x Seriously tho, on the way to work I go through 14 speed cameras. It's very easy to forget one, and go a few mph over the limit. If somebody produced a 'reminder' app it would be more than helpful. I've got 6 points in the last two months, and on both occasions was 4 mph over the limit. If my C500 had bleeped a few hundred yards earlier, I would've slowed down. Here's hoping.
Guest ultimasnake Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 just joking... they can be hard once in a while.. though learning them is a good thing too :)..
Guest ferret Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 You could try searching for mapopolis. I've never used it so I've got nothing to say!
Guest netcetera Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 Hello, We are currently working on a number of GPS based applications - including Speed Camera Warning System and Location based services. If you are interested in Beta testing PM us... Requirements: WM2003 handset Bluetooth GPS regards Peter http://www.smartlocator.co.uk
Guest sponge Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 4mph over the limit? I would be contesting those tickets. Speedometers aren't that accurate.
Guest nedge2k Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 I could be wrong but I think Croccy22 was working on something like this :)
Guest meatgrinder Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 i think so nedge2k and yes, unless you're blatantly speeding - contest it :) Dave
Guest nedge2k Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 Unfortunately you cant contest 140 on the M4...
Guest meatgrinder Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 lol, you could try "thats sooo ridiculous" - then they see you drive a silvia..... dave
Guest gvr Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 4mph over the limit? I would be contesting those tickets. Speedometers aren't that accurate. But unfortunately its enough to set off a gatso :x
Guest Dectomax Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 But unfortunately its enough to set off a gatso :x Tell me about it. Also a policeman only allows 10% of the limit for speedo inaccuracies. Ie. 33,44,55,66,77 mph. I was doing 34 in a 30. Can't wait for a speed cam app. for my C500.
Guest arnespv Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 Should be no problem. Any gps/nav software has this option. Almost all of these software have POI's or 'landmarks'. These POI's can be downloaded and loaded into the system without any hassle. Two problems: the POI's need to update regularly AND you need to have the software make a noise when it's nearing the POI. But these two problems should be pretty easy to solve.

Guest Dectomax Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 Should be no problem. Any gps/nav software has this option. Almost all of these software have POI's or 'landmarks'. I'd been using Mapopolis demo with the Speed Camera POI loaded in and it showed them up great, but as you said they don't beep when approaching one. Not much good when your driving. I pointed this out to the Mapopolis people but alas still waiting for them to pull their finger out!! I won't buy the full version until they sort it. What a massive opportunity they are missing.
Guest nedge2k Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 Croccy's app should, when finished, enable you to be constantly updated by way of server connection and allow you to add new locations as and when needed :)
Guest phil-t Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 if you goto Pocketgpsworld you will see tomtom running on a 'smartphone' with the POI detection feature which strangely works very well for speed cameras, with warnings, etc.. be nice if checkpoint would be upgraded to work on tomtom smartphone.. as this is very easy to use, and already has the user contributed database, which is pretty comprehensive...
Guest dreamweavel Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 Can you really get Speed Camera POI for mapopolis? It doesn't mention it on their web site; is it produced by mapopolis or someone else??
Guest sponge Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 Tell me about it. Also a policeman only allows 10% of the limit for speedo inaccuracies. Ie. 33,44,55,66,77 mph. I was doing 34 in a 30. Can't wait for a speed cam app. for my C500. I have always been told it's 10% + 2 mph (or is 3?). Anyway, speedometers still aren't that accurate. Some can be out by a mile. I would still contest and ask to see the evidence and the calibration certificate for the device that captured the little 'indiscretion' :P It always struck me as strange that the accuracy of speedometers isn't part of the MOT test. Furthermore, saying your speedometer has a tolerance of +/- 10 % and therefore you cannot give me this speeding ticket would not be a good defence in court. :D I suppose it's all academic and a topic for another forum. :) I hope Mapopolis are looking into ways of improving their software. Don't get me wrong, I love it. But it could do with a little polishing. I've already mentioned it needs a female voice and a speed camera plugin would be excellent too.

Guest Dr_StrangeTrick Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 The camera POI is in the main Mapopolis thread. Download the file and place in your mapopolis folder, then open mapopolis press Menu, Choose Map press Menu and Refresh then you will see cameras.mlp in your list press Menu then press Selection and make sure you are on Multiple Select then highlight cameras.mlp and press Action and Done. Thats it the UK safety camera database from PocketGPSWorld thanks to Griffog. Its a bit old but if you follow the thread there are notes on how to convert TomTom POI's to Mapopolis.
Guest blewer Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 4mph over the limit? I would be contesting those tickets. Speedometers aren't that accurate. There is a 10% allowence, then it's down to the county as to what they accept on top of that. Most cameras outside London (Or Major cities) are set to 2 MPH above the 10%. So you would get away with 35mph but 36mph you would get done. In London most are set higher, you can get away with faster speeds. You can't tell that i've been caught a few times, can you? The police sent me on a speed awareness course :) If you get done for any lower speeds than this, contest them! I did
