Guest meatgrinder Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 well, heres my mini guide to syncing over bluetooth :) if you dont have widcomm drivers - go here --> http://www.jonsguides.com/bluetooth/ righty, first hurdle cleared, once u get ure dongle working properly with the widcomm drivers, do the following: firstly, make sure your dongle is plugged in! switch on your smartphone, go to start>settings>bluetooth>bluetooth> then choose discoverable, click done and quit back to the homescreen. ok, done that? right click the new bluetooth tray icon, located next to the part of the start menu where the clock/date is :D - choose EXPLORE MY BLUETOOTH PLACES. look to the left of the window which opens, and click "view devices in range" - your smartpone should appear :P - if it doesnt, verify bluetooth is on discoverable (on the phone) and also make sure its in range (about 10m - tho it should be right next to your pc when ure doing this, no?). then....right click it, and choose PAIR DEVICE, follow the instructions, entering hte pass key on the pc, and on the phone. once successfully bonded, your almost ther :). Next, right click that bluetooth tray icon i mentioned earlier, and choose advanced configuration, click the local services tab, take a note of the com port for the "bluetooth serial port". if there isnt a port written next to this, go to your phone, click start, then activesync, press the right softkey, and choose connect via bluetooth, your should get a prompt from the pc, about the phones attempt to connect via the com port, allow the action, and (i cant remember the exact wording...) allow this connection in future too. the phone shouldnt actually sync at this point, so restart it - power off and back on again. right click your activesync tray icon, chosoe conenction settings (when nothing is synced to the pc). ensure that the allow serial or infrared conection to this com port has had its box checked, and that the com port matches the one we noted down previously. all going well, the phone should now sync to the pc! :) Go to your phone, click start, then activesync, press the right softkey, and choose connect via bluetooth, your should get a prompt from the pc, about the phones attempt to connect via the com port, allow the action, and (i cant remember the exact wording...) allow this connection in future too. hope this helps all you guys, perhaps a mod would like to sticky this? any problems, post here, and, if i can, i will help. if its unclear and any point pm me/post here and i'll try to clear it up for everyone. if you encounter any problems that your solve yourself, pm them to me, or post them here, and i'll add them to this post :D for passthrough internet - go to your phones settings (start/programs>settings>data conenctions and set internet to pass through) then go to activesync, go to tools, then options. click the "rules" tab, then - where it says pass through - set conenction to "the internet") Dave :D [EDIT] I've been advised by Vector, that this guide may not be 100% applicable to service pack 2 users, not sure how much use this is, as i dont use service pack 2, either way, it'll help someone [/EDIT]
Guest meatgrinder Posted August 27, 2004 Report Posted August 27, 2004 it has been brought to my attention that croccy22 has also written a bluetooth syncing guide, perhaps you guys should check his out too --> http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=113278 Dave
Guest reGen Posted August 27, 2004 Report Posted August 27, 2004 i personally found it easier to find the PC and initialise bonding from the devices section of bluetooth :)
Guest nechbi Posted August 27, 2004 Report Posted August 27, 2004 I had a nightmare myself trying to get the darn thing to sync. I found a very useful guide on Geekzone to connect an i-mate Smartphone2. It worked a Treat. Would seem that the key is to do all the connecting/syncing from the handset and NOT the PC! Best-a-luck..
Guest meatgrinder Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 lol, really?! i found it much easier to do as much as possible from the pc, i've set this all up several times - for myself and others, and this method works (for me) 100% :) Dave
Guest sponge Posted August 29, 2004 Report Posted August 29, 2004 I have an MSI BT USB dongle and got it to work fine with my E200 pre SP2. However, after a format and OS reinstall, inc SP2, I can't get my BT dongle to work. :) I like to use drivers/software from manufacturer's websites as they tend to be more up to date than what's on the supplied CD. With this in mind I downloaded the drivers from the MSI site that were labelled as specific for XP SP2 users. After this I tried to install the applications from the CD (same version as those on the site) but I think this is where it went wrong. I can't get the dongle to work now. I think the MSI software is conflicting with the Windows software, but uninstalling the former doesn't seem to help. :? So until I can fix it, I have to rely on the old fashioned USB cable.
Guest nechbi Posted August 29, 2004 Report Posted August 29, 2004 I have an MSI BT USB dongle and got it to work fine with my E200 pre SP2. However, after a format and OS reinstall, inc SP2, I can't get my BT dongle to work. :) I too have a MSI BT Dongle - After installing XP SP2, I was unable to get Bluetooth to work as the drivers in SP2 did not support MSI. MSI have updated their website with the drivers for SP2. You will find them HERE. Uninstall any BT dongle/drivers that you have from Device Manager. remove USB Dongle, Plug back in and when prompted point install wizard to new drivers. It works a treat!
Guest sponge Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004  I can't get it to work. I think it's SP2. I have tried various combinations of uninstall/install; looked at all the tutorials listed; and it still won't Activ-Sync. I seem to get the BT dongle recognised and it initially detects my c500. During that process my phone even acknowledges the PC. But after that I can't get them to communicate. COM ports are set, SP2 drivers are installed, I have run Wizards till I am blue (har har) in the face. I am going to try it on my girlfriends PC now. She has an E100 and SP2 and I have successfully synced my E200 via BT with it before. But her PC doesn't have the updated MSI driver for XP SP2... EDIT: I have just checked the Network Connections window. It lists a Personal Area Network and under that the Bluetooth Network Connection. But it shows it as disconnected. There is no option to connect. Double clicking on that produces a window showing BT PAN Devices, but it is empty. Trying to 'Add', results in failure, whether the phone have BT on or discoverable. All these wizards and windows are different to the ones from SP1.
Guest sponge Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 It works fine on her PC. No problems at all. All very simple and straight forward. So the only difference is that I have the 'new' SP2 driver from the MSI website and she doesn't. :?
Guest sponge Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 I set up my connection so that whilst sync'd the phone should use the pass through connection to the web. How do I know it is working? Is it simply the absence of a little G at the top right of the phone screen ?
Guest meatgrinder Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 thats it sponge. no gprs 'g' in the very top right onf the screen when your browsing :) Dave
Guest Phil Lee Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 If you have the Internet Connection set to Automatic it will use pass through when connected to the PC and Orange 'GPRS when it isn't. The only downside I've found with this setting is that Traffic Counter SPE doesn't work if the connection is set to automatic.
Guest sponge Posted August 31, 2004 Report Posted August 31, 2004 I managed to surf the net via BT whilst upstairs and the BT dongle is in my g/f's PC downstairs. I didn't think it was, but I wanted to make doubley sure it wasn't via GPRS instead :)
Guest meatgrinder Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 edited that into my tutorial sponge. i'm finding the bluetooth range on c500 to be far greater than on e200 - i can happily sit downstairs on passthrough internet and chat on msn/browse the net infront of the telly! :) Dave
Guest meatgrinder Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 also, sponge, the first line of my tutorial has a link to good widcomm drivers, and a guide to installing them (and making them work) with ANY BLUETOOTH DONGLE :) Dave
