HTC Vivida - Microsoft Smartphone with Bluetooth (Verizon)

HTC is getting a lot of attention from Verizon Wireless these days. As we have already reported, the #1 US carrier will presumable carry the HTC harrier – a PDA like device with Bluetooth, VGA camera and EV-DO hyper-fast data capabilities. Little information was available about second device from HTC for Verizon Wireless (tentative)– the Vivida. The sliding style handset is jam-packed with features like large 176 x 220 pixels display, VGA camera, IMAP4/POP3 emails, MMC/SD memory extension slots, Bluetooth, HTML and WAP browsing, SyncMC and Radio. The price and the exact date of availability are not certain, but expect to see it around Q4 of 2004.

just thought i'd add another pic (from mxphone.com)....

Looks like it aint gonna be restrcited to the US, dopod appear to be interested in this one, cant say i'm a fan of its looks to be honest, prefer regular slider, sliding the joypad just complicates things for the user.

BTW, HTC Vivida is the first device for North America to feature R-UIM (Removable User Identity Module) which is a smart card the size of a postage stamp, very similar to a SIM card in GSM. It allows a subscriber to easily switch between phones and keep all of their phonebook and subscriber data (phone number, features etc). If the R-UIM module is inserted into a GSM device, it will function as a regular SIM card, allowing CDMA subscribers to roam to GSM very easily (of course the CDMA carrier will have to have a roaming agreement with the GSM operator).

You know what? i don't really like this phone... the keyhiding is nice.. but kinda useless since it hides normal numbers... slide it downwards and put a querty keyboard there and you got a good sliding purpose, for games this phone will be sh*T since it looks rather hard to reach the numericpad and as Disco Stu says.. it looks more like a certain nokia odd looking mobile or that errr X phone or so (not o2's) but the odd one with the x shape on it....

And since the specs are not known yet besides what we already know... i don't like it YET :)

It may not be that bad IF the slider will act as answer/hang-up as well, so you just slide and talk without pressing any keys - that would mke it cool :-)

And if you add Cyberon VoiceCommander and bluetooth headset then you won't need keys at all AND don't forget it's got Radio... so maybe this phone is not completely doomed ;-)

Is that FM radio though, or this push-to-talk business?

Also, looks like it might be slightly bulky, but maybe just compared to C500.

7610? :)

And yeh ,suppose it does look a bit bulky in that pic that Midnight just posted, My SPV C500 does more than enough for me in such a small form! :P

I hope there will be more clamshell Smartphones showing up... will never buy anything like Qtek7070 again: too bulky and looks like artefact when you pop it up on the street or in the bus... Silver clamshell looks much better for me :-)

Nice design i guess, looks a little plasticy though. Still, good to see a big more innovation from HTC :)

Don't think I like it at all. Looks pretty ugly actually, reminding me of that n*kia too! But then I didn't like the C500 when I first saw it in pics but loved it when I saw the actual thing. I ended up early upgrading for a £100

I'll do my best at preventing myself from switching carriers to get this phone. Cheers to Verizon for offering a new Smartphone....but it will be sometime before they offer another. My options will be greater by sticking with GSM. But it is tempting.

Am I the only one who thinks it is hideous?

I dont think it's hideous. I'm also banking that it's small and will be made in different colors that the prototype shown.

No

I apologise to the Orange representative(s) at the last IRC chat sesh.

If I were them, and knew this was coming, I would have restricted my comments to sundry variations of "No Comment"

hm, any idea how big its going to be?

i think its just a little smaller as the SPV E200, screen is the same size..

too right m8, looks ok-ish closed, except for being made from cheap looking plastic, but open, sheesh that things ugly, and i just think its wrong, slide out from the bottom, sure, but dont open it up by moving the joypad, thats innovation for the sake of it rather than being useable.

i been patiently waiting for a slider smartphone, like a bigger sl65 or 7650, but this is ridiculous. but look at how well they manage to make xda3. doesnt make sense?

Guest AngelOfRage

i think its really ugly, it looks cheap and horrible. a slide doesn't really offer any much more than a normal phone, just cashing on the the current "slider phone" trend...

that red nokia clam shell on the other hadn doesn't look to bad for a fashion phone.

Your not the only one Paul. I think it's very ugly, particularly compared to ther new HTC smartphones revealed here recently.
