I've tried syncing my C500 loads of times but can't get it to work. It recognises the handset but then won't sync afterwards or let me explore the device. If i click explore when it is connecting i can quickly look at whats on the device but once it has finished connecting it blanks everything off. I have instaled it loads of times and also rebooted both pc and phone tons of times.

Anyone any ideas?

Do you have a firewall installed? If so try turning it off, best to disconnect from the internet first. If that works you then need to configure it...

I also have the same problem ....

I can get it to sync with my networked PC at work running Win2000 - but only if turn all the synching components off i.e. contacts and calendar - I left tasks on (as i had none set) and Synching now works....

But now at home - I can't get it to sync on winxp - in fact activesync 3.7.1 won't even detect the device via it's usb connector...(altho windoze detects a new usb device)

done the whole lot of on/off - rebooting - reinstalltions - even spent 30 mins on the phone with Orange 3rd level tech supp and they are dumbfounded...

Could it be the handset? :?:

After thinking this was the best phone ever - I've seriously have my doubts now .... it is true .. Size isn't everything ...

I'm going to go dig out me old E200 .....

try doing a search boys, there are lots of us having problems.....

Seems to be a common theme, that people with problems used Orange backup / restore. Those who didnt use it are having no problems.

thebigshabowski, you're problem at work sounds like the orange backup/restore activesync problem. If you have your contacts stored in Outlook try using the Clear Storage function in Applications and then DO NOT use Orange Restore, use Activesync to return your contacts. This should sort out this part of the problem. Problem at home sounds different though.......maybe a firewall problem. Have you just upgraded to WinXP SP2 or are you using the Windows Update service?

Ahhhhh bisto ...

just read up on 'most' of the posts referring to this problem, god stuff Dr. W on figuring it out ... even the Orange level 2/3 tech boys didn't have a clue. :?

I have yet to try your solution, but the strategem is sound. I will mosey down to an Orange shop confuse them with this tale and have them store my details before trying this out.

Funny how I never had this problem with my E200 - apart from terrible sound, dodgy mic and bulky-ish size - my E200 never had any major problems :) .

Good be the ROm - could be winMobile 2nd ed - could just be shoddy MS coding - heaven forbid that to ever happen....

..but hey the boyz here at work are impressed and we're thinking of porting our new sports service over to msmobile ... so something for everyone today. yay :!:

Interesting that you never had a problem on your E200 - for the short period of time that I had it mine had the same problem as my C500. Do you know what ROM you were running on your E200 (i.e. was it the same ROM as when you received it)?

the syncing worked fine on the original e200 ROM when i first bought it in Oct 2003 and when I upgraded the ROM off the Orange site in April. No problems on either work or home machines.

I used both outlook 2000 and outlook 2002 ....

I never upgraded to the Aug 2004 ROM that is now available, but may do soon then go sell my old e200 phone on ebay for a laugh... and put hte money towards the possible purchase of the neonode N1 phone....

It was only when I introduced the c500 into my life that things went nuts.

Did the people who had these problems - were you all with Orange (or at least had the orange operator s'ware on it)?

... perhaps when the upgrade comes out that it'll all be heavenly once more....

The most interesting thing is that when I was figuring this out at one point I deleted all but two essential new contacts from the phone and then when I tried synching these two contacts synched with Outlook fine. Essentially I think that Orange Restore returns the contacts in a format unreadable to Outlook but only on the C500 and it would seem the 2.6.7(not sure if that is the real number?) and the 2.7.1(not tried this ROM?) E200 ROM's. Was your upgrade ROM the 2.6.7 (or whichever preceded the 2.7.1)?

To be honest if all your contacts are already in Outlook you won't have a problem. Clear Storage, sync and away you go. However I hadn't got my contacts in Outlook (my PC died the same day I got my E200!) so I had to use Orange Backup/Restore. Having looked back over A LOT of activesync posts I think this flaw was responsible in a good many cases. The given advice of 'hard reset' always cured the problem, which it would as long as you have managed to sync with Outlook at some point in your phones life and I am guessing most people would try and sync the phone BEFORE they ever needed to use Orange Restore.

Still secretly quite chuffed that I figured out why my phone wouldn't sync!!!!
