Turned my phone on this morning, it started up but then crashed on the screen with Cartman on (2003 rom).

I turned it off normally, then tried to turn it on, but it wouldn't.

Naturally, I placed it in the charger. Nada.

I then re-seated the battery. Nada.

I did this a few times, and eventually got it to turn on, but it was telling me there was no sim, as it had got pushed out of the clip thing when I put the battery in. I put it back in and replaced the battery, but then it wouldn't turn on again. I've been fiddling with the battery for about 30 minutes now, even pushing it up towards the connectors while trying to turn it on, but it's not responding.

If I can't get it back, or it keeps going when I do, I think I'll take it to Orange store at weekend, but what can/will they do?

As you have 2003 you have invalidated your warranty so if they check your phone you will not get any support from them.

Try charging the battery overnight without powering up the phone.

I got the battery to charge by just leaving it in overnight, but now it will not accept the SIM card.

It says something along the lines of "Sim error, you may only make emergency calls" but will not let me do anything else, the screen won't go away.

I've hard reset the phone about 5 times now but still no luck :)

With that sort of error I'd suggest contacting your network

operator as the card appears to blocked as it is allowing emergency calls.

Have you tried any other sim cards? MAybe somethings gone wrpng with your sim?

Tried my SIM in other phone and it worked fine.

I've reinstalled 2003 ROM from my computer, still not working.

[EDIT: Just tried it without any SIM at all and it still gives me the exact same message!]

check to see if your sim is seated correctly. Sometimes the small plastic tabs in the sim slot break. What I did was stick a small piece of cardboard cut from a paper tablet over the sim then put in the battery so it pushes down on the sim to seat all the way in and make contact with the pins.

You really do deserve a medal. Just did exactly what you said, placed a thin bit of cardboard over the sim...and it worked perfectly!! :)

The little plastic tabs had indeed snapped off but I didn't notice until looking closely.
