Hi,

Can anyone comment on the RF performance of this phone? I've read many many reviews and non of them really talk about the RF on this phone.

I had the Imate Smartphone 2, but sold it due to its horrible RF. Just to give you an example, in my room with the Imate, I would get 1-2 bars (out of 5) while with my new Nokia 6230 I get 4-6 (out of 7). Also, at work I would get 0 reception with the SP2, while the Nokia gives me 1-2 bars.

I am hoping that the C500 will be the same as my Nokia 6230. I really loved the SP2, but the reception problem made me sell it. :)

IN good reception areas it's good. In my house it's a lot poorer than either my E200 or my E100

OUCH!

Thanks for the reply. If it's worse than the E200 then that's bad news (assuming that the Imate Smartphone 2 and E200 have the same RF).

No problems here at all. Using the bars as an indication of RF performance is a waste of time though, because there's so many factors that affect how many are displayed!

That is true, but how do you account for that fact that the SP2 would not have service at work while the Nokia has service and I can make calls?

I'm not trying to. All I'm saying is it's pointless trying to compare the RF performance of mobile phones, based on the number of bars showing on the display!

Reception is abysmal on all networks in my office.

Strangely my C500 seems to have the best reception of all the phones in here.

we have all sorts Nokia 6600, Ericsson T68i all on orange France Tarifs

I find it is noticeably worse in marginal areas compared to:

E200

E100

Nokia 8310

Nokia 6230

Nokia 6100

All phones tested using same Orange SIM

Good signal areas it is excellent.

Isn't that like saying "When the weather's good, it's excellent" ?! :)

How are you measuring signal strength? Using the bars on the phone's? As I said earlier, this is meaningless. e.g. I can still make GPRS calls when I have no bars. therefore this must be the best phone there is in terms of RF performance! It can make calls in zero signal strength areas!

yeah, according to my c500 i have no signal at the moment, yet i can use GPRS and make/recieve calls without any problems :)

Unless I have lead lined pockets my phone will not ring in my house with it in there. Take it out of the pocket and a few moments later I get one of those annoying Orange missed call alerts.

This never happened with any of my previous phones. Another example: In the pub Full Strength signal on the Wifes Nokia, no signal on the C500, but says "Orange" on the homescreen. Wifey calls my phone, straight to voicemail.

thanks for the replies...

Looks like I will be staying with my Nokia for now.

Anyone know whether the reception on an Orange E200 is better than on an Imate Smartphone 2?

Hi WeatherB, glad to see you made it over here...

As I said on HoFo- it depends on the handset also- I have seen mixed views from people on the performance of the C500 depending on the handset. As far as RF, I found it as good as my V600, which holds a signal very well, and the voice quality was very clear.

Hi! :)

Thanks for your help on HoFo... I'll probably end up getting the I-mate Smartphone 3 from Expansys once it's available in October.

I am in a marginal area, and downstairs in my house, my Nokia 6310 struggles, the missus's T610 seems OK, 2-3 out of 5 bars, and less drop-outs..

The surprise then is my C500, this shows 3-4 bars compared to the T610, and suffers from zero drop-outs...

I know you can't read much into how many 'bars' are showing.. as In work (In a big tin roofed place), phone reception is sketchy, yet I can make calls when the C500 shows no bars.. and is defo better then all our Nokia business phones..
