Guest jasonh Posted September 11, 2004 Report Posted September 11, 2004 SMSNotify 2004 has been released. Version 1 is signed with unpriviliged certificated. A Demo version can be obtained from http://smsnotify.developer.net.nz
Guest fozzie Posted September 13, 2004 Report Posted September 13, 2004 Anyone managed to get this working? I've tried on my C500 but can't get it working - the ring tone doesn't sound and the SMS count doesn't increment :)
Guest jasonh Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 Anyone managed to get this working? I've tried on my C500 but can't get it working - the ring tone doesn't sound and the SMS count doesn't increment :) Fozzie and anyone else that has this problem. Please revisit the site and download the demo again. It now obtains a new certificate that should work on most carriers world wide. Instructions Uninstall the version you currently have Downlaod the new demo Install demo Open SMSNotify from the start menu (This will initilise it with the SMS system) Assign a contact a tone, thats it NOTE: After you have done the above steps, if the inbox application is already running, your phone will have to be restarted so t hat the inbox application picks up the new INBOX listener. Let me know how it goes, should work for you now fozzie.
Guest fozzie Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 ok, got it up and running now :) A couple of observations: It would be nice if the app could only play the selected tone on its' own and not with the default sms tone. (I appreciate that this is the 'standard' behaviour at the moment and the workaround is to turn off the default tone through the normal settings/sounds page.) Perhaps a default tone could be set from within SMSNotify? I don't think it is intuitive that the left soft key shows what the next page settings are for. I think perhaps it would be better if it showed what the current page settings are? Hope that makes sense. The sms counter only refreshes if I go off the selected contact and re-select them. Other than that, this is a very promising app
Guest crafty Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 Nice App! I used this text to speech engine to record a wav saying "New message received from xxx" then inserted a silence at the start of the wav the length of my normal message tone (the new mail tone from MSN on my PC) and it works a treat!
Guest jasonh Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 fozzie and crafty, thanks for the replys and feedback. Good to hear it works on other mobile carriers. All registered paying users will receive a free 1.1 update which will have the following. 1) predicitive search on the contacts to easy navigate. 2) SMSNotify will contain the default sms tone and override the system tone if user specifies this. 3) Out of office. Ability to set a auto reply function to a contact so when someone texts you and this is set, they will recieve a custom reply. 4) Test of SMS Photo Notify. Have a photo appear when a contact sends a sms message. 5) Other UI improvements. Thanks again. Jason
Guest mavisdavis Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 Very impressed so far. I have tried various contacts and all sizes of wavs and it hasn't failed yet. look forward to the upcoming releases. Also great minds think alike. when I started to use this app I wondered how hard it would be to display a contacts photo at the same time  And if anybody knows how to make a robotic voice like Midnights borg themes I would appriciate any advice.Cheers Thanks jasonh for the hard work I've enjoyed using this. Its blown my mates away so far :)
Guest mavisdavis Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 One thing I have noticed is that when your sms tone is set to vibrate in the settings the sound of the wav goes really quiet untill it stops vibrating.Maybe we could select vibrate as an option in the app? Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest jasonh Posted September 18, 2004 Report Posted September 18, 2004 For users who have purchased the 1.1 release, they will get the free upgrade which has a vibrate only function (instead of a tone) or a popup message box. This will be in version 1.2 which will also have picture support as well. Thanks for your feedback though. Is appreciated Jason
Guest mavisdavis Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 Jason when is the 1.1 version going to be updated in the beta d/load section of your website? I'm still using v.1. I got our email and went to the site uploads a v1.1 but it still says v.1
Guest jasonh Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 V1.1 is what is on the site. V1.1 is the exact same code base as version 1 except it has an updated certificate to work on more mobile carriers.. 1.2 will contain code updates which will contain some cool new features.

Guest fozzie Posted September 26, 2004 Report Posted September 26, 2004 Great news. 30 days and counting :)
Guest mavisdavis Posted September 26, 2004 Report Posted September 26, 2004 Looking forward to the release. Keep it up Jason
Guest stilger Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 Any thought of a replay sound option or a beep option. It would be nice to be able to replace our pagers with our phone only but we cannot do that because if we miss the initial sms alert it could be hours before we notice an alert. An option to play a sound until you acknowledge it would be great. Having this be a per contact option would help to eliminate constant alerts from contacts that do not need it.

SMSNotify V2 is nearly available. One of the features it has is the ability to allow end users to create applications (Native or managed .NET) which will get called after SMSNotify has processed a user. So technically it would be possible to write a C# app for instance which flashes or plays an on going tone/vibrate option depending on the last number/SMS received... I did this as I did not want to introduce to much into the main SMS processor and you cant please everyone, so atleast this way people can write their own events that will get executed.. Hope this helps.
Guest chucky.egg Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 If I buy v1 do I get a free upgrade to v2 when it is released, or will it be an extra cost?
Guest jasonh Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 If I buy v1 do I get a free upgrade to v2 when it is released, or will it be an extra cost? Hi Chucky, Any purchases made before the end of October will get a free upgrade to Version 2 Jason
Guest chucky.egg Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 SMSNotify 2004 Version 1.2 Should be out in about a month or so. Thanks for the info jasonh Is there a version 1.2? I downloaded the trial from Smartphone.net, but I've realised that it's version 1.0. I want to be able to have a special tone for a couple of contacts, and a "general" tone for all others (without having to specify it for every non-special contact!) The "Override Silent" option would be useful as well. v1.0 does not do what I need, but I might be tempted to buy v1.2 if it exists, and these features are in it, and I can upgrade to v2 without having to re-purchase. Otherwise I'll hang on and see what's in v2 Can you advise?
Guest jasonh Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 No version 1.2 exists. It was decided to go straight to Version 2. Currently the only available version is 1.1 which just allows custom tones to be assigned to contacts. A trail version of version 2.0 will be release shortly after the final release. (Hopefully in 2 weeks time) I will post when live. Jason

Hope this helps. Jason, could you expand on this a little? Do you mean that we will be able to specifiy the path to an exe that will automatically be run (per Contact?) after processing each SMS? We could then easily (!!?) create our own app that plays a WAV until a keypress is detected (for example)? You know, the more I think about it I reckon you should create a seperate app that allows looping WAV/LED until a keypress is detected. I get the impression that this should easily be within your capabilities and I'll bet there would be a huge demand!! Cheers again! Craig
Guest chucky.egg Posted October 26, 2004 Report Posted October 26, 2004 Yeah, I think most people would struggle to write their own app to do this. If there was a kind developer that could do a general one for everyone's benefit that would be great, but this seems like a popular request so I'd say it would be worth putting into your app in the first place. Can the phone handle VB scripts? Maybe there's a way to do it like that, which might make it easier to write custom events
Guest jasonh Posted October 26, 2004 Report Posted October 26, 2004 For the application extensions, this is what happens. When an incomming SMS arrives it does a check to see what applications have been specified to be launched. It then enumerates this list and launches the application(s). These applications can be c++, c#, .NET for example. The last incomming handled SMS number is stored which these applications can reference. If required, the application can check the senders number and act on it, or simply do nothing if the application has a specific purpose for a certain number. With SMS events, there are alot of things that one can do, but I did not want to include everything within the main SMSNotify processor as this gets executed on every SMS interception. The goal for this is to be small, tight and fast as there should be no delays on deliverying incomming messages. The external apps are loaded and executed asynchronously so they do not hold up the main processing engine. After V2 is live, I am planning on releasing some add ons. This is another advantage as for people who have purchased SMSNotify V2, I can release free downlaoded apps which end users can then just copy to their phone for their use without having to reinstall the whole application again. I like the idea of the Continious Looping sound and yes, I am sure I could implement something tlike this very quickly. Infact, I might just do that. As they will be free addons; if you have any more useful ideas, let me know and Ill see about implementing some shortly after the final release. Jason
Guest mavisdavis Posted October 26, 2004 Report Posted October 26, 2004 Animated gifs like Incredimail. I could just see the butler wondering onto my phone to deliver a text ^_^
Guest jasonh Posted October 26, 2004 Report Posted October 26, 2004 The photo display feature is html based. There is a default htm doc for showing contacts on SMS arrival, however a custom template (html) file can be created per contact, and as its html, yes you can have animated gifs. This is what I do for most of my contacts now ^_^
