I'm assuming that Flight Mode cuts off the RF part of the phone so you can use inflight? Might sound obvious, but this is my first smartphone. Can't wait to tell the annoyingly cheerful stewardess that I don't need to turn off my phone 'cos I'm in FLIGHT MODE 8) . Little things please litle minds......

yeh you are correct

however some stupid and ignorant flight stewards might still want you to turn the phone off

if so tell them to F-Off :)

Yeah, I've flown recently and was told that all phones need to be switched off, even if they have a flight mode facility!

All thats about to change soon as many airlines are allowing phones to be left on, well, most it seems except British Airways. They've done thousands of tests and Mobile phones cause no interference problems to planes at all.

Can you imagine terrorists taking over a plane by threatening to turn on their mobile phones if they dont meet their demands? :)

Telling a member of a flight or cabin crew to F-Off will most likely see you srrested and/or thrown off the flight.

If you are told to turn your phone off after explaining that the radio is off, then turn it off - you will survive without your phone for a few hours. tkae a CD player, Minidisc, gameboy with you for flights if you are that desperate, or even read a book!!!

or even read a book!!!

That's what the phone is used for :)

It seems a bit unfair to have to take music players, books & Gameboys on a flight, when you've got one lovely little gadget that does them all. Might have to hang on to my PDA for a bit longer after all. Saying that, I had my trusty Ipaq chocka with books, games & tunes for a 12hr flight recently, then had a wee bit too much too drink and slept through the entire flight  .

Yeah, i agree that is an extra hassle to have to take other things to do on the plane when the smartphone is quite capable of doing them all. But it is an easier option than getting into an argument with the flight crew and getting chucked off the plane or arrested!

@midnight: You're right, taking over a plane with a phone is hilarious, but have you ever noticed that you are not aloud to take a pocket knife on the flight but get a sharp metal knife and a metal fork with your meal?

My airline states in the welcome aboard PA "all mobile phones must be turned off for the duration of the flight including those with a flight safe mode".

All airlines have different policies.

PS: Bigmak, all airline meals (certainly from UK airlines) are served with plastic cutlery including first class passengers!

CD Players and other optical music devices have to be turned off too.

But not laptops with DVD ROM drives?

Stupid rules

iirc, the problem with leaving a mobile phone switched on was not the problems it caused to the aircraft - rather the disruption it caused to the mobile network!

Was recently on a coach in Germany and they demanded you turn phones off as well as they claimed it interfered with the coach......

I asked why it was safe in a car then and they got all funny with me.

I think the main reason is so people do not get annoyed by everyone saying at the top of their voice:

" I'm on the .............."
