Guest rocksnake Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004  help, my beautiful new mobile telephone (c500) has clearly had an arguement with my laptop and is 'not talking' to it. i just get the Active sync box saying "connecting......" aaaargh! the fustration makes my teeth itch! any advice/sympathy wil be appreciated.... ....bloody nice fone though- raised many an eyebrow with my colleages at 'the link'.....ha ha ha :)
Guest Robstobbart Posted September 19, 2004 Report Posted September 19, 2004 Hi, Following on from this post, I've been fighting with my C500 trying to connect it with my laptop for the last 24 hours and no joy. You guys seem to know what you're talking about so here's one for you. Firstly I've tried both USB and bluetooth connections, to no avail. USB I have installed the latest Activesync. After plugging in the phone the USB drivers were installed and detected the phone fine. Activesync goes green (connecting) and stays like that... forever. It never actually synchronises. I've tried removing and reinstalling Activesync. I have downloaded the latest Activesync from MS (although I'm sure it's the one I had anyway) and repeated above. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling/updating the USB drivers that install themselves I've tried all the USB holes on my computer, although I know they all work I've can't try another cable as I don't have one. I have 'Hard Reset' my C500 to make sure it's not rejecting the link somehow. The C500 does draw power from the USB which I presume tells me it's connected properly. Bluetooth: Again, I can't connect via bluetooth at all. I joined the phone and laptop by making the phone detectable and bonding that way (and later the other way around). They detect each other and activesync kicks in. It tries to connect for about 20 seconds and then tells me that it can't because either 1.) The device is not connected properly (it's bluetooth, and it is) 2.) The device is not a smartphone (it damn well is!!!) I have removed and reinstalled the bluetooth drivers I have followed the bluetooth sync guides posted on this forum (which all go fine up until the last 'syncing' phase. I have all the com settings set up as they should be, according to the syncing guides mentioned above. I even tried linking via IR but that doesn't kick in at all and to be honest I don't want to be reduced to using it anyway. Possible solutions: I recently installed SP2, noticed it was a load of **** and the extra "features" were things I already had (firewall, pop-up blocker etc) and uninstalled it. Could this be a problem? Do I need to format and reinstall to get rid of whatever it's done to me? If I do, can I install SP1 from MS website or will it only offer me SP2 directly now? Help very much needed, I love my phone but I want to be able to make full use of it. Thanks in advance. Rob **** Update, I've reinstalled windows, no SP2 install to worry about, and the USB problem is still there. I haven't tried Bluetooth but am not hopefull. Is it a hardware issue...?
Guest Eldorado Posted September 19, 2004 Report Posted September 19, 2004 You should install XP SP2, it contains many security fixes as well as the other features you don't need. Do you get a popup box at all from Active Sync asking you to create a partnership with the device? Also you can try in the main active sync window on the PC clicking File -> Get Connected and follow through the steps for it to try and search for the phone. Make sure also that under File -> Connection Settings that the USB option is ticked to allow syncing via USB.
Guest Robstobbart Posted September 19, 2004 Report Posted September 19, 2004 I've fixed the problem!!! Eldorado, thanks for replying. I had tried all the things you mentioned, but in the end it was something much simpler (and less logical). I use Atguard as my firewall, I have rules for all the programs that connect to the outside and then a 'final rule' which blocks everything not mentioned in the 'allow this or that' rules. For some unknown reason this final rule blocks communication between the C500 and Activesync. Disable the rule, even for a few seconds while they link, and all is well. I could understand if this was just affecting BT, as that is afterall a means of talking to devices remotely in a potentially insecure way, but to affect a USB link??? Who says computers make sense? :)
Guest rocksnake Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 whoa, bit of a headache for a while, eh Rob? mine ok now (phew) - did a uninstall/reinstall and al-a-kazamm, everythings peachy..... :)
Guest Confucious Posted September 22, 2004 Report Posted September 22, 2004 You should install XP SP2, it contains many security fixes as well as the other features you don't need. . Not if you want your Pc to still work afterwards :)
