Guest cming0808 Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 Hi, just a quick question - i come from the world of pocket pc's and have had an e200 for a couple of months now. For the most part my ipaq is now redundant but the one thing i miss is avantgo. It seems to be available for symbian phones but not MS powered phones. Do avantgo intend to make their service available for smartphones running windows? If not is there another service that is available to download content on our smartphone and read off line? Thanks in advance.
Guest Exploited Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 As it seems no one has replied to this post, let me reply to this question to blow new life into it. I previously owned PalmOS- and SymbianOS-devices and AvantGo is really usefull for keeping your GPRS-usage to a minimum. Does anyone know if and when AvantGo is expected to release a SmartPhone-version?
Guest BrAGoL Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 AFAIK, there is none doing of porting AvantGo for SmartPhone platform... Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Exploited Posted September 28, 2004 Report Posted September 28, 2004 I wasn't referring to a port. AvantGo themselves support many different platforms, including Palm, Symbian, WindowsCE and PocketPC. As of yet they haven't released a Windows-Smartphone version and I was wondering if anyone knew when that was due for release. In the mean-time I have found a reference to that myself. This is what the AvantGo-site has to say on the subject: "...we are just finishing our client for the new SonyEricsson smartphones. But when that is done we will quickly move to testing our already-developed client for Microsoft Smartphones. If all goes well then this would be released in Q1 2005." That is a long wait. AvantGo=Free and adds a lot more functionality for me than MobiPocket does...and I have to pay for a lot of the functionality of Mobipocket :)
Guest CDTV Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 I too miss Avantgo. While we're waiting (too long), another piece of functionality I miss is the "mobile favorites." That's that icon that looks like a PDA on the top of your desktop's IE that magically "synced" the web pages (thru activesync) on my PPC's IE & made it a lot easier to get to the web-content...it even seemed to cache-those pages at times (i.e. no GPRS connection required) so it was like avantgo in a way...if you follow...anyone know how to do that same thing on smartphones?
Guest shk718 Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 In the mean time you may want to check out Mobipocket - they have an offline news reader that works very similar to avanto. i used it for my symbian phone until avango came out. its not as eligant as avantgo - but it gets the job done. http://www.mobipocket.com/en/eNews/default.asp
Guest otacon Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 sigh... it seems that mobipocket is shareware... sigh...
Guest Confucious Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 I emailed Avantgo ages ago and out of the blue I received this just now: Thank you for contacting AvantGo Support! While we haven't officially announced plans to support these devices, we demoed a version of our software running on the Microsoft Smartphone at the European Smartphone/Orange. We're currently evaluating customer interest and will announce any updated information about future support on our website. AvantGo Support
Guest BrAGoL Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 I wasn't referring to a port.i wasn't referring to that too! what i mean is, it is not yet customizable for Microsoft Smartphones as of the moment... In the mean-time I have found a reference to that myself. This is what the AvantGo-site has to say on the subject: "...we are just finishing our client for the new SonyEricsson smartphones. But when that is done we will quickly move to testing our already-developed client for Microsoft Smartphones. If all goes well then this would be released in Q1 2005." That is a long wait. trully a long wait... ^_^
Guest Emad Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 MobiPocket reader is free and has pretty much all the major functionality - it's the Pro version that costs money..

Guest bartsimp Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 Ok, the real equivalent, available today on our platform is isilo. It's a very good software, better than avantgo in my opinion. http://www.isilo.com/

Edit: Ok I missed the fact that you can download the files. for viewing later. When it comes to special formats, the market leader is the one to go for.
