Guest coolstream Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 I have Active Sync successsfully installed and can browse the contents of my phone and install programs. However, when I I try to backup using the Tools option, Backup/Restore is greyed out. What have I done wrong? TIA Active Sync 3.7.1
Guest ferret Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 Nothing, you can't backup a smartphone using ActiveSync. I think that option is there for PPC.
Guest Disco Stu Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 I recommend Sprite Backup software. :) Essential kit for when things go pear-shaped  http://www.spritesoftware.com/products/spr...smartphone.html
Guest coolstream Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 Thanks for the quick responses. I took a look at the Sprite d/l page. It says that it won't work with Orange phones. :) thanks for the suggestion anyways!
Guest Disco Stu Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 Quoting the Sprite website : "Sprite Backup for Smartphone is currently only available for Smartphones that can run unsigned applications. This currently includes smartphones provided by AT&T and several other providers, but does not include Orange and Verizon Smartphones. Smartphones from these providers will be supported in the near future." This is rubbish as I and many others use Sprite with Orange Smartphones. There may be a problem with the MPx200 for some reason, but I've had nothing go wrong with both the SPV Canary & E200. Obviously you have to application unlock the phone first. I shall email Sprite forthwith
Guest coolstream Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 Thanks for the heads up! Installed the prog on e200 and it worked! will try it on an mpx200 later on BTW is there a reader to check the .pbf file contents?
Guest chucky.egg Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 I think there is an app that lets you read the contents of the database files, but I think they are CDB files not PBF... Have a search and you might find your answer Dont forget that if you are on the road when your phone dies you need to be able to unlock your handset again to reinstall Sprite before you can restore the backup! There's another thread around here somewhere where I've posted a URL file for the OTA Unlock site, which you can keep on your SD Card, and someone else shows you how to jump straight to the "OK" page to start the unlock with one click!
Guest Disco Stu Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 Not that I know of. Just in case, and seeing as it's so quick & easy, I tend to save both to PC & Storage Card and do weekly backups. I did have one corrupt file restore though it was probably the phone itself that was messed up. I just restored the previous file and everything was fine.
Guest coolstream Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 From what you say about having to re-unlock the device, I presume that the backup consists of user data and not of the whole installation (as in a GHOST image). I presume also that if things went wrong, I would have to hard reset and then 'add' the backup. This is the main reason I wanted to check the contents, so thanks for guiding me towards an answer. If only it were as simple as running ghost from the pc whilst in canary screen  I will try the mpx200 with sprite later on tonight and let you know how I get on
Guest chucky.egg Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 I've read that it's made by the people who made Ghost, but I don't know if thats true To restore from a fecked-up phone: Hard reset Software Unlock (OTA Unlock works fine, but apparently there is some software unlock thing around) Install Sprite Restore backup from the SD card It restores pretty much EVERYTHING from the phone - registry, contacts, ringtones, applications but I seem to remember it missed something when I last did it. Check the existing threads cos there's lots of info on this already I think. Well worth the money though IMO.
Guest Disco Stu Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 That Sprite response in full ! : "Thanks for pointing this out, however, we have posted this notice because a very larger number of people who have ‘un-locked’ their phones, have then bought our product and found that it still does not run as expected. Our help desk is then bombarded with questions related to unlocking that we are not able to answer, as many different phones are locked differently, and to different extents. We request access to all parts of the phones that most unlocking apps do not seem to fully unlock. If you are interested in our product, and think you have successfully unlocked your phone, please download the demo from our website. You will be able to tell if it is running properly by looking at the about page, where you will see either ‘privileged mode (if fully unlocked) or ’unprivileged mode’ (if not fully unlocked). Kind regards, Martin Dykes Sprite Software Team"
