The modem in your computer (Connecting to a normal phone line at least) works on tones, or noise (Thats the funny noises you hear when logging in). As they are completely incompatible, your phone will not work as an ordinary modem, hence no socket. A few older phones did allow connection as a modem, but still worked over the air, and not via a phone line (Thats why its called a 'mobile') However, you can use a smartphone as a pseudo-modem (In 2000 or XP) if you download the driver from Mono's site, www.monolithix.org.
