CD-R troubles after SP2 and Media Player 10

Have installed media player 10 and SP2 onto my laptop ... everytrhing is running fine apart from my CD-RW/DVD combo drive - playing and reading discs is fine, but it won't record - it will make a start but not finish - usually just as it closing/finalising a message comes up saying it couldn't complete, or couldn't write to the disc. this is on a number of disc brands - both CR-R and RW.

Any ideas anyone? cannot find any info on MS website.

Am needing/wanting to reinstall the machine anyways, but wondered if anyone else has experienced this.

(HP Pavillion ZE4111s with QSI SBW-241 drive)
