Guest danbear Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 With all of these mods and upgrades and changes that people are willing to try, has anyone actually tried to manipulate the hardware inside of the device to improve reception? I don't really know anything about the inner workings of these things, but could a person swap out the "receiver" part with one from another motorola phone that picks up certain other bandwidths or is known to have excellent reception?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 The biggest problem with the internal ariel is that the MPX200 main body is metal and so automatically reduces signal.
Guest otacon Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 Bout the bandwidth, it's not bout the receiver, but depends on other hardware also. Like my mpx200 can only receive 1800 and 1900, though the antenna can detect 900 also. I agree with awarner. Because of the metal body, the reception deteriorates drastically. It would be great to have an external antenna though...
Guest danbear Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 here is an example if what I am thinking. let's say you have two phones from the same manufacturer and are similiar makes. They both work on 1800/1900, but one picks up the 850 also. Could someone swap out that piece of hardware so the other phone gets the 850 instead?
Guest otacon Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 I did ask motorola to do that for my mpx200. but they said that it's not that easy. it's not just the antenna, but it some kind of board inside the phone too...
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 25, 2004 Report Posted September 25, 2004 There will be a chip on the circuitboard that controls the band selection.
Guest otacon Posted September 26, 2004 Report Posted September 26, 2004 yeah... and to enable the phone to be tri-band, you need that chip, and not just change the antenna...
Guest danbear Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 Is that chip unique for every phone, or could a person swap one from phone to phone?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 it would not be that simple, as the hardware would require more than just a chip swap.
